Second PSU

Postby pengyman89 » Tue Dec 25, 2007 2:55 pm

Hey all, i have a few weaker PSU's lying around. If i were to get a new video car, would it be possible to hook up a second PSU directly to that videocard (8800GT for example), instead of buying a new, more powerful PSU?

Thanks

edit: if i were using another psu solely for the video card, how much wattage would i need?

Not a good idea!!  In theory it can be done..but most PSUs do not supply power to their ancilliary connectors until the PC is actually switched on.  Therefore you would have to know which pins to short-out on your 'spare' motherboard connector in order that the second PSU was continually 'hot'.  This is probably in breach of every Electrical Regulation in the developed world!!  NOT RECOMMENDED!

Actually Jim lies. Just get a PSU jumper and you will be fine. Many people who build watercooling setups buy them so that they can test their setup out of the case for leaks before adding it to their hardware. Because the PSU thinks that was switched on by the PC it provides all the power the MOLEX pull. You can get one of these from www.frozencpu.com or www.preformancepcs.com

You also have the option to do a 24 pin ATX splitter. This basically hooks both PSUs into the board, kinda the other alternative to the jumper. This can also be found at the above web sites.

Nice one Cameron. Another decent FS developer (for anyone who doesn't know, Jim is one of the Simshed team and recently helped produce the excellent Skysim Vixen) leaves the forum due to an unnecessary remark. ::)

Please, can everyone at least have a brief though about what they are posting and how they are wording it before they commit to the "post" button. We can't afford to lose people who will genuinely try to help other in the community.
