I hack my card and windows TCPIP stack to squeeze a bit more out of my service, which is 84000 kb/s, 10500 KB/s or 10MB/s.


My 10/100 network card limits me to 10MB/s but the hack allows a tad more

It takes me about 10-15 seconds to download a 100MB file

is correct but inaccurate about the 1024 calculation


as for how to convert... there are several schools of thought in that but with IT bandwidth, stick with base 10 or 1000

1024 is used for KIB not KB

'k' and 'Ki' stand for 'kilo' and kibi respectively. They are prefixes to units where 'k' stands for 1,000 and 'Ki' stands for 1,024, because 'Ki' comes from its use in computing where 210 = 1,024. Unfortunately, 'K' is often incorrectly used instead of 'Ki'. Furthermore, the broad public not being necessarily aware of this subtle difference, usually uses 'Kbps' and 'kbps' indiscriminately, creating confusion. Whenever 'Kibps' is used, it is usually accurate.

Isn't 11mb/s enough? I mean, my pages load instantly and same with my vids and my downloads are always less than 20 seconds. Why waste money on supersonic speeds, if you don't use the "super" in your "sonic" speed?

at 11mb/s it would only take you a few minutes to download a 100MB file but I need the bandwidth because the data sets I work with are 5-10gigs+ in size which I can download in under to just over an hour


I upload and download quite a bit and the connection I have is designed for corporate and university connections.

Surfing the internet does not require that type of bandwidth or anywhere near 11mbps however when I need to send or receive large data chunks quickly, I do not have time to wait. Before I retired it was not uncommon for me to send and receive 50 gigs of data several times a week.

The net is only going to be as fast as the server on the other end sending you the page or data and typical web domains do not run that fast, at least not for another 5-10 years where eveyone will be on a 10-50mbps (or higher) connection as standard

Besides, its been running slow over the last few days anyway. I think black Friday/weekend IT shopping is dragging the net down

I usually get between 50000 and 75000... 100000 is my max if the system is clear and I use a close server like Portland or LA
