Doing up old PC

Postby cpthammond » Tue Nov 27, 2007 4:02 pm

hey whats up..

I am going to do up my old pc as it does nothing..except clog up room in my bedroom. Now I don't use this PC for FS9 or FSX as it does not have a graphics card fitted. Please may you professionals recommend a decent graphics card best suited to the system specs.

Emachines 5260
250GB hard drive
512mb RAM (displays 488mb though)
2.93GHZ Pentium 4 (Bus Speed:133.3Mhz | Rates FSB 533.3Mhz)
Motherboard: Intel D915GAG with 64mb chipset 82915G

Any more specs needed please say. Please may you recommend a decent card for the comp.

Don't spend much on it, look through the classifieds for a cheap graphics card. Micro Mart has a very comprehensive ad section, you'll almost certainly find something there.
My advice to you would be to leave well alone though. You won't get much out of that PC. As you said, it's an old one just taking up space. Do you really think you'll use it?
Take it apart, rebuild it, test it, and learn from it. Use it as a project.. even toy with overclocking.. just don't spend much money on it...please.
;) You know it makes sense  ;)

I'd look for a cheap nVidia Ti5*** card on eBay or the like, that'll get you reasonable performance for minimal expenditure on that rig ;)

Does anyone think that buying 1gig ram and getting a 256mb graphics card (or 320mb) is worth it?

NVidia 5*** means cards with a 5 prefix, like 5200, 5500 etc.  ;)

It isn't a bad card. The big question is what specs are your PSU?

The penny dropped guys! Lucky I didn't spend any money on it..this PC is now in the bin.. as I opened the case only to greet me was 2 PCI slots and a PCI -E x4 or something or other small. I saw where the PCI-E x16 was meant to be but it had been taken off..it was even marked on the motherboard.

Oh dear ;D
