I would at least change the RAM and the graphics card. For RAM get 2GB or 4GB of DDRII @ 1066MHz (or 800Mhz if you can't afford the faster ones). For the graphics card... you should definitely go for the 8800GT... it's much much faster than the 8800GTS even though it has less memory... and it heats up less and the power consumption is much better.

Edit: I forgot ot mention the 8800GT is much cheaper than the 640Mb 8800GTS!

You're right on a 32-bit system there is no advantage in having any more than 3GB...however make sure your 3 GB is made of matched pairs ie 2x1GB and 2x512MB

thats a great idea about the drives!!! i didn't know you could do that....going to return computer to store and ask him to keep it until i confirm which updates to install....so i'm totally reliant on this forum........seems like one has to go to the store and purchase frame rates...maybe $150 per frame...i would like a 20f/s please  :)....so ok, unless something else comes up, its 8800 gt and ddrII 1066   i notice they only come in 2x1gig...how to configure?? is there a 2x500?....appreciate......................................pain of ignorance......vic

Yancovitch,

There is really nothing fundamentally wrong with the hardware you've purchased. Make sure the 3Gb is split into 2x1Gb + 2x512MB, ie 4 sticks. The faster RAM would be nice to have..but as for the graphics card I'm not sure it will make any significant difference.
Get the RAID off, the drives formatted and go for dual boot.

Regards

Jim

thanks...will configure the other drive to xp...............the fellow at the computer store says that 1g ram opposed to two 500's would make little or no difference..so if someone has some technical data to persuade?? i'll show it to him. anyways, he said he'll try to refine the settings in the computer for me...if i can get 20 fps, i'd be happy............8800gt is not available in canada..and the 1066 ram only comes in 1g.....so i'll have to leave it as is i guess...next i'll have to learn about the nhancer, cause of the jaggies in fs9........cheers

Actually the 8800GT is available in Canada, but like everywhere else it is in short supply and expensive where I live (Edmonton).

If you install a pair of memory modules it will run in dual channel mode but if you put in a 3rd stick then it will revert back to single channel mode.

Well, if the 8800GT isn't available in Canada yet, you should consider waiting a bit. I live in Portugal and here the 8800GT costs 250 EUR as opposed to 360-450 EUR for an 8800GTS. The scenario should be similar in Canada soon.

WindowsXP x32 can use over 2 gigs of memory IF the following is edited into the hidden file:

C:\boot.ini

Here is an example of that file:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

The following MUST be edited into that example:

/3GB /Userva=2900

So the completed file looks like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect/3GB /Userva=2560

save and reboot

However, FS9 will not use more than 2 no matter what you do. FSX will use more than 2 but FS9 has a limited address space. The code posted above will allow the OS to make use of installed memory above 2GB but it will not allow full use of 4 total gigs,...
