Win 95 mouse help?

Postby DONTREADMYUSERNAME » Mon Oct 15, 2007 7:40 pm

I have a uber old Dell Deminsion P133c running Windows 95. Recently the mouse stopped working. I changed out the mice (mouses?) and yet it still didn't work. Towards the end of the start up process an error message pops up saying "program yada yada yada, has preformed an illegal operation and must be terminated" I think this may be what is causing the problem but I can't be sure. I tried to reinstall any of its drivers but could not find it on the web or find the Win 95 cd. (Thank you to M$ for shutting down all Win 95 support :( ) Sooooo, anyone by chance a Win 95 expert?  ;D Not really expecting any help, just thought i'd throw it out there.

By the way have you tried trouble shooting a mouse problem without using the mouse?! Its hard as hell. The tab button helped a bunch though.

whos the dumb*** who came up with the idea to give all control to one device. Just kidding...

Have you tried Start/Settings/Control Panel/Mouse to test a mouse? Or right click My Computer, left click properties/Device Manager/Mouse/Properties. This will show if the mouse is working properly and show driver information. You could also try a mouse in the serial port(s). I think Microsoft mouse drivers are pretty accesible on the internet.
I don't believe there is a way to troubleshoot without a mouse installed. The TAB key works in place of a mouse for making selections, as does the arrow keys.

Tried all of them except the serial port one...... having said that i just did it still no luck. When i boot up the pc it says, "Keyboard: Detected, Mouse: Detected" But it just wont work?  :-/

Sounding more like the Win 95 is corrupt. By your description I'm guessing mouse detection is done before Windows loads? If this is the case, the drivers are being recognized.
My first thought was that the PS/2 mouse port went bad like they sometimes do. If it didn't work via the DB-9 serial port that likely isn't the case.
If you want to keep the 95 OS, eBay is good place to get a copy. That rig would be great for running old MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 games, especially the SVGA games.

Just a thought... Since it is a Dell does it have a drive D:\ with backup info?

That only became an industry standard around 2005ish. I don't even remember a way to setup a recovery partition for 95.
