You're all probably sick of it...

Postby Mobius » Thu Oct 11, 2007 12:12 am

...but here I go anyway. ;) Here are the preliminary specs for my new system -

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600

G.SKILL 4GB PC2 6400 RAM

BFG 8800GTX

ASUS P5K-VM

2x SAMSUNG SpinPoint 500GB

Rosewill 850 Watt PS

The Case, if anyone is interested for some reason

If anyone notices any glaring problems (especially with the motherboard, a bit of a shot in the dark on that one), I not an expert in hardware, so it's extremely possible I missed something. ;)

Also, should I go with 32bit or 64bit Vista? Call me stupid, but I'm not too sure of the difference there...:P

Thanks for all the great help. :)

Basically it looks somewhere in the direction of my current setup

Memory: Checked QVL list on these? Havent seen much 2GB/module ones yet
Video: that one is OK
Board: get one whitout builtin video.. and a full-sized one. For the chipset / video match: Ati on Ati, Nvidia on Nvidia, Intel on Intel... That are the best matches... Intel cards are crap.
Harddisks: RAID?

Basically: Get a different MOBO...

you want to be careful on the case, that 8800GTX is a very big and hot card. you will need enough room and air flow.

+ the mobo concerns posted above

looks good to me :)
EVGA are a good make, and very good customer service if the unlikely happens with an EVGA product.

And for the Vista version: what else do you use that machine for...

I'm a dummy, I completely spaced out after asking that.  Sorry. :P  I'm going to use it for gaming mostly, and secondly homework (Word, Excel, a few CAD and math programs).

Thanks again.

you will require 64bit if you plan to use all that RAM

0- 3.5gb RAM= 32bit

0- >3.5gb = 64bit

64bit can still work with a few gigs of RAM (lets hope you dont have 0gb, but its there for proof) but beyond 3.5gb, 32bit operating systems dont know what to do with it.

its like training personnel- a semi trained person can go up to a certain limit, but a highly trained person (64bit) can do what the semi trained person did, but alot more than

hope this makes some sense. 64bit can utalise more RAM than 32bit.

Yep, I ordered the 64bit version.  It seemed the best way to go. ;)

Not if you have never used a 64bit OS before. Things are going to be a lot different. You are going to want to do quite a bit of reading before you really get into the OS.
