Hey Nick I just tested a few flights with different weathers, and the performance is awesome, I'm locked at 25 and can almost keep is steady there, that's the good news. 8-)

Bad news is I got a bad case of the jaggies. Specially with the plane. I'm guessing this is something we can fix with Nhancer so here are the shots:

You changed video drivers... before we go anywhere with Nhancer, check the GRAPHICS settings in FS9 and verify the following:

Hardware Tab:
Frame Lock @ 24-28
XXXXxXXXXx32, NOTE: SET THIS TO YOUR MONITORS NATIVE RESOLUTION - X32
Check in: Render to Texture,
Transform and Lighting,
UNCHECK AA,
Trillinear Filtering
Mip Quality... typically 4 but you can try bumping it up... will cause 'grainy' look if too high
Hardware Lights 8,
Global Texture Slider 100%

When ever you change video drivers FS9 can reset its hardware... if that is what happened we may need to look at the config file too

also... if the above checks out, before we do anything save a copy of the FS9.cfg file somewhere safe and let FS9 rebuild a new one, then use the list posted to set it up. http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2 ... 729872/2#2

If its still out of whack, then we will look at other things.

Make sure the Nvidia driver 3D settings (Nvidia Control Panel - Manage 3D settings) the drop-down under GLOBAL PRESETS is set to BASE PROFILE and if it was not, set it and check FS9

next, if that does not work...

and let me throw something else out there, in case Nvidia is overriding the Nhancer settings, highlight the OLD:

MS Flight Simulator 2004 DISABLED PREDEFINED

and set it up EXACLY like you did for the copied profile.

See if that shakes the monkey out of the tree.

If it does, I need to contact the developer for Nhancer

You got it man!

These 2 did the trick

Under the Optimizations tab... Trilinear Opt CHECKED, Bullet in - Off ... you have it in ON right now it looks like

Almost forgot... under compatibility High Dynamic Range (HDR), bullet in ENABLED

Go have some fun and report back after you have had a few flights under your belt. I dont know if you put your old FS9.cfg file back or not or if you are running a new one which you edited but if its working, leave it alone and I will run through the config file with you to make sure eveything is as it should be. If you followed that list, I am sure you are probably set.

I will be attending services and will be gone for a few days so if you have things to post and report, just put them here and I will address them as soon as I return.

Final thoughts:

After following the instructions given by Nick N very carefully I can tell you that my system is working better than ever. I used to have my fps locked at 24 and have some issues staying there. Now I'm locked at 30 and it only jumps down to 28 in normal conditions, it can go down to 24 if taking off KSEA with full AI and bad weather, but I can't tell the difference by just looking at it. My only problem are some particular clouds that are a little tough on  the fps, but that's just a matter  of changing to my other clouds, I don't think I'm going back though, these look  great.   Graphics wise it has never looked so good and smooth, even for other stuff not related to games. Basically the change is obvious and I'm very VERY pleased with the results.

Thank you:
Nick N, I see a lot of post in this forum asking for assistance and not that many giving thanks. I want to tell you that there are a lot of us that really appreciate the time and effort you put into giving the best advice you can give. What you do for us goes beyond just answering a question you educate those of us who read your post,  and let us make educated choices. Again, THANK YOU I wish there was something I could do to repay you.

Thanks
Dan

PS.     Gone flying! 8-)

Glad to hear it Dan

Remember the title of this thread? You now know what that setting is and how if affects the sim and your experience.

You also now understand that it can not be changed... but it can be optimized, which is what you did in this thread.

Remember what I told you about LOD_TARGET_FPS=X and how the sim starts pulling back on details and flight dynamics as you get closer to that number?

What you did was simply release the needed resources that allow the sim to function above the LOD_TARGET_FPS and therefore you see and feel more than you did before.

Its the same hardware and the same machine. We did NOT boost or overclock anything (however that will increase the performance again dramatically past this point)

All we did was make sure the drivers and hardware were working properly, cleand out the STARTUP system from unneeded programs, then removed Windows drag on the system which includes shutting DOWN prefetch and allowing O&O defrag and the layout.ini file to do that instead of Windows, and then optimized the hard drive so the CPU was not spending its time sending cycles to the bus for reading the disk. We took all those resorces and gave it back to MSFS so now instead of the sim pulling back @ a lower LOD_TARGET_FPS, it gives you what you need to maintain FPS without the loss.

The rest is in video driver anf FS9 settings, and, in add-ons that provide a sharper detailed world (and properly set up too) like Ultimate Terrain, FSGenesis mesh and landclass, and other sceneries.

Remember that when you add something to the sim you must re-do the disk maintenance!!!!!!!

Here is the regular maintainance schedule if you dont do any major installing/uninstalling:
