Oh FYI while I was doing something (don't know what) I noticed that on my desktop a file called thumbs.db (database file) was created, can I delete this, I have no idea what it belongs to  :-[

Ok, now that you have Flight Environment installed and your weather situation corrected, the next step is to make sure your drivers are up to speed.

The drivers you have installed are OK. They are not a bad set and if you wish to leave them alone, thats fine.

But they are from April of this year, and, eventually you will have to upgrade drivers. When you do, you are going to run into problems with anything new because Nvidia changed their drivers to try and squash Nhancer and Rivatuner from controlling the profiles and hardware. They did not completely succeed, but, they did make things a bit more complicated and a pain to deal with should you ever wish to upgrade.

In that, as I get time later today or tomorrow, I am going to post the process for upgrading the drivers, and, Nhancer so you have that information. If you wish to upgrade the drivers now I will walk you though it using the same instructions and if you wish to wait, you will have a copy of how to properly replace video drivers in the future.

There is more to it that simply hitting "uninstall"

I will post the step by step process as soon as I can. Once we finish in that area we will move on to the defrag.

dont worry about thumbs.db.. it is just a system file that Windows will replace if it needs to.

Dan, If you decide to keep your current drivers and not upgrade them, I will post the final process and defrag steps for you to get going on and then post how to upgrade the video drivers later.

If you do wish to upgrade them, I would prefer it be done before we finalize the system maintenance.

I would prefer to update them now, that way I can use it as practice under your supervision for when I have to do it on my own.

Thank you again for all your help sir  8-)

6.
Install the new video drivers. Once completed reboot the system. Once back into Windows allow a period of time ( a good minute) for the system to finish installing the new drivers, then, set the correct resolution for the monitor and verify the refresh rate is correct. Reboot the computer again. Set the desktop icons back to where you want them if they moved.

7.
For Nvidia systems, install the latest version of Nhancer. Reboot.

8.
Once back into Windows, run Nhancer from the start menu. It does NOT need to boot with Windows or have a tray icon since the service runs in the background and will properly influence the settings. When it is first run select NO to have it run with Windows or have it place an icon on the tray.

With any driver above 163.xx Nhancer can no longer delete the profiles as it did in the past, instead the way you OVERRIDE the FSX and FS9 profiles is do the following:

a.
Scroll down the profile list until you find the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (or) Microsoft Flight Simulator X profile. Click on it once to highlight it. Once it is highlighted, click the DUPLICATE button. You will get a message, select YES to complete the duplication. What that will do is DEACTIVATE the Nvidia profile and ACTIVATE your new duplicate.

b.
With the new profile in the list, make sure there is a bullet in PROFILE on the right. Go down the list on the right and select the following:

AA:
For FS9, select MUTISAMPLING and 4X
For FSX select SUPERSAMPLING and 8xS

FINAL MAINTENANCE:

==============================

WARNING: YOU MUST HAVE WINDOWS XP SP2 INSTALLED IN ORDER TO USE O&O DEFRAG. IN SOME CASES OLDER OEM WINDOWS DISKS WHICH REQUIRE YOU TO UPGRADE TO SP2 MANUALLY MAY NOT FUNCTION CORRECTLY WITH O&O DEFRAG AND THERE ARE RARE OCCASIONS WHERE THE DISK MAY BECOME UNREADABLE AFTER AN OFFLINE DEFRAG.

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU UNDERSTAND IF YOU ARE RUNNING AN OLDER VERSION OF WINDOWS THAT DOES NOT HAVE SP2 INCORPORATED INTO IT, THERE IS A CHANCE OF COMPLETE DISK CORRUPTION.

=============================

Before we begin the defrag process I want you to go through your system and delete any garbage you do not need. The more junk you get rid of the better optimized you will be.

If you are satisfied that you have cleaned out the system, please do the following to ensure everything is clean before we start:

Browse to and clean out

NOTE: Some combinations of newer Nvidia cards and motherboards have issues with the O&O Defrag in their native video support. It is possible the screen may look distorted during the offline defrag and you will not properly see the readout on the screen. There is nothing to worry about if that happens. Simply let the system run and when it is finished it will reboot automatically. It can take anywhere from 30 seconds to an hour for an initial offline defrag to complete. Let me know if you experience that video distortion.

After the Offline Defrag has completed, Click START

Question:

Is the cable going from the video card to the LCD unit have plugs that look like this:

or like this:

or, is there some type of converter plug in the DV cable converting it to VGA?

OK, no big deal on the monitor. My G-card uses DV ports but my monitor only accepts VGA so I used an adapter.

Just finished doing all of the steps,  have not tested it yet with FS9 but I can tell it has picked up speed in other stuff (opening programs and such)

Only thing to report is that during the OFFLINE DEFRRAG I had the video distortion, no big deal (black screen some red bars at top and bottom)

Anything else we may be missing?

Thanks
Dan

Going to test FS9  :D

Lock your frame somewhere between 24 and 30. Play with those numbers and see what happens. There is not much else I can suggest other than a few FS9 checks such as confirming the scenery database has not somehow become corrupt or out of sorts and perhaps some config file changes.

You should see positive changes with everything accomplished.

Try it out and see how it runs.

I cant believe you would not see any differences after going through everything as we did.

Its too bad you are locked in VGA mode.

you do have to remember that if you are not running a replacement AI traffic the default models can be a drag on the system. I would keep traffic at about 80-90% max but do not set it low or to zero. Keep it at least 80% minimum

Let me know how it looks and feels. Remember FS9 is not about frames its about smooth flight. Always fly full-screen and after yoiu take a few flights we may look at a few FS9 things.
