Monitor/Video Card Settings & Scenery Payware

Postby Mothball » Thu Oct 04, 2007 5:41 pm

It's a crap-shoot as whether I'm posting this in the proper area, but here goes anyway. As I have stated in other posts, I have been very disappointed with FS Global X 2008. It just occured to me today that my FS9, FSX and NVidia 8500 GT resolutions are set to 1920 x 1080 x 32  and my 32" Sharp Aquos monitor is set to 1400 x 1050 x 32. I have everything set to full blast on FS9 and it is 98%+ smooth, and I have FSX dialed down just a bit under full blast and I get fairly smooth graphics there also. I see that the Active Sky X Bundles and FEX are both out now. They look very interesting to me, but then again, so did FSGX8, Ultimate Traffic/UT7, Traffic/MTX and the Traffic Plus Packs, none which I was very impressed with. So three questions:

#1)   Could it be, that these resolution settings could just totally override anything FSGX8 has to offer?

#2)   If I buy the Active Sky X Bundle and FEX would I be equally as disappointed? I see both boast of graphics taken at 1024 x 768 x (??).

#3)   Will Active Sky X & FEX work in conjunction with each other like AI packs do? Or will it be like cramming two apples together?

Thanx for any and all insights, viewpoints, and ideas. Semper Fi, Dave

Dave the problem may be the system not your graphics card and monitor. What exactly are you system specs? What version of Windows are you running?

I'm not really a computer guy, and I have not  been able to find the computer spec sheet. But, I'm running Vista, dual 64 Pentium IV processor w 4Gs of memory and I just changed to an Nvidia 8500 GT (which made a big difference by itself) I think the graphics are great, but the scenery payware seemed as it did nothing. The graphics seem great without FSGX8, with it, the graphics look exactly the same. Hopefully, that would provide you enough info. Thanx and Semper Fi, dave

First of all, you want your FS9/FSX resolution to be exactly what is run on the desktop, and, you want the desktop set to the NATIVE resolution of the monitor so everything is running 1:1 in balance.

The first order of business is to find out what the monitors native resolution and refresh rate are, then set that up correctly in the Windows display settings and make sure the driver settings are not overriding that. You should be able to get that information form the monitor manual or the website for the model. Do not exceed the native resolution of the monitor or force FS9/FSX to run higher than the monitor is designed to run.

Windows display and the drivers are 2 different things which typically the drivers will follow what you set in Windows but you must confirm that. FS9/FSX settings are again different and you must select the correct native resolution in FS9/FSX so it matches Windows and the drivers.

Next is setting up FS9/FSX correctly in the sliders and checkboxes for graphics. Refer to this post for setting that up in FS9:

Also, I would highly recommend you get rid of the Nvidia profiles that OVERRIDE what you set, and set up the drivers as listed in this post:

Be aware with newer Nivida drivers they may not allow Nhancer to run with an error:

"Error reading XML file 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvapps.xml': There is an error in XML document

One last thing I almost forgot about

FSX introduces a new setting in the config file for WIDE SCREEN monitors. It must be edited manually as there is no checkbox for it:

[DISPLAY]
WideViewAspect=True

Set to TRUE for wide screen monitors and FALSE for standard

Also, with FSX here are some posts that will help you get that configured:
