8800 gts huge had to take out heat sink

Man I'm installing my new 8800 gts I had to make a hell of a lot of adjustments to my case in order to get it at least running.

But I had to take out the heat sink. Turn out that with out it my pc will just shut down. how can I tell what kind of socket I got so I can buy a smaller heat sink that will fit? right know I have it running by just having the metal portion of it on top of my cpu chip. but I can't leave it like that.

Or is there a way to "glue" the heat sink to the top the of the cpu? I can sit it on top but can't install it properly with the rack it has to hold it

HELP PLEASE!!! I'm desperate, going to have a stroke!

Find out what type of processor type you have and what socket.  More then likely theres a reasonably small but effective heat sink for it.  As for just leaving the metal on the CPU...wouldn't go running FS without a fan on it.  The heat sink fan going out while running FS overnight was what lead to my old systems literal meltdown  CPU temperature failsafe...failed :-/

Might even look into cases.  Some good ones can be reasonably priced and give you that much needed space for larger hardware

I have an Antec P 182SE and am using a Thermaltake Big Typhoon on a CD2 6700 and my 8800GTS fits just fine with room to spare.

OK, now I played a little with the drivers and it's looking great, still I just got the heat sink sitting on top of the cpu with the fan working but can't screw it down to the board

This is my current cpu Intel (R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.00GHZ (2CPUS), any idea what socket it uses? Possible mother boards? I have no idea how to tell guys.

I think I got an LGA 775 socket for the Pentium D. Now on to look for a heat sink that will fit.

I thought you were posting a pic of the HSF wobbling around on top of the socket

You should not be running it in that state, so be careful.
