Time for a new machine!!

Postby N2744X » Sun Sep 02, 2007 12:10 am

Hi everyone! Im not so computer smart as far as programming and stuff like that, but with hardware im ok. Only the things that are needed to basically make FS run as far as programming is what i know. I am going to either buy or build a new PC. I would like some feedback as to what hardware i would need to get as follows:

Example:

Maximum FS Settings flying the Captain Sim 757 at Simflyers KEWR

Say I wanted to get between 80-100 frames.

Can someone please list the hardware that would be required, and a ballpark estimate as to the price in USD?

Thanks A Lot!

For one...what version of FS are you thinking...FSX will never max out on current hardware available...FS2004 is pretty doable for around $1000.

Two...80-100 Frames...no point...the human eye cant even detect that and you will never get even FS2004 to do that maxed out.  30-35 FPS in FS2004 is incredibly smooth and perfectly doable ;)

I have never had any Simflyers scenery or payware aircraft so don't know how framerate friendly they may be.  But my new system I finished early last month runs FS2004 completely maxed with some pretty detailed freeware scenery and a Meljet 777 which used to bring older systems to a crawl when in outside view...Its locked in at 30 FPS which is perfectly smooth and never see them drop.

Specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0 GHz E6850 CPU with a 1333 MHz FSB.
2 Gigs PC8500 (1066 MHz) DDR2 Dual Chanel RAM
512 MB PCI-E GeForce 8500GT DDR2 Graphics Card With DirectX 10.
Gigabyte S-Series P35-DS3R Motherboard.
160 GB SATA 3.0GB Hard Drive.
430W Thermaltake PSU.
DVD/CD Burner.
Windows Vista Home Basic 64-Bit.

Cost about $1000 USD to build (Just the tower).....Mind you I already had the power supply and DVD/CD burner.  Couldn't be happier with it. 8-)

The human eye can't perceive above 25 FPS which is why that is the normal rate for TV and movies!
Okay I'd say stick with XP as an OS for the moment as it uses less memory than Vista so you'll get better performance. Next big question is DX10 compatibility?

You're gonna start another FPS flame war with talk like that!
I agree the human eye cannot perceive more than about 24FPS but an LCD screen is not an optical device it is a digital output device.

I save these cause usually nobody explains this stuff better than that guy

There are differences with LCD and CRTs depending on the application. FSX seems to run best unlimited on my LCD after the SP1 patch was released but FS9 was always frame locked and so was FSX before SP1. I know Nick explained the reason for the change in FSX sp1 and LCD but I must not have saved that link. Something to do with the video card and the refresh rate on the panel but it does not work for everyone

I agree the human eye cannot perceive more than about 24FPS but an LCD screen is not an optical device it is a digital output device.  In some 'Shoot-em-ups'  If you do a rapid 180* turn the computer will try to redraw the whole panorama as you rotate (unless it has been programmed to take account of rapid movement).  So the processor suddenly gets called upon to re-draw the scene far in excess of the 24 FPS. If it can't handle it then you get stutters....so in some games very high fps are called for!!  Thankfully very high rates of turn are not common in FS so moderate FPS are all that's required.

Regards

Jim

Beware. If you are a regular Multiplayer FS 2002/2004 Flight Sim Flyer, the Server will insist that you lock your Frame Rate to 20 FPS, to reduce the bandwidth load on the Server, and affecting other players.

Locked at 20 FPS my system works at it's most "smoothest", overall...(FS 2004)....;)...!

F...."Smoothest" is "Nicest".....G-BPLF... 8-)...!
