New PC, Thoughts?

Postby JamesH » Sun Sep 02, 2007 3:54 am

I'm getting a new PC this weekend, and this one has caught my eye. My main (ney, only) criteria is that it runs FSX well.

Here's the link to PC World's specification page, http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0576214066.1188722799@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccddaddllhighfhcflgceggdhhmdgmi.0&page=Product&sku=387563&tabIndex=1

I've looked at some benchmark GFX card figures I found via this forum, but unfortunately it didn't show anything for the 8300 GS. Can someone take a look and tell me what kind of performance I can expect out of this rig?

Thanks, J.

with this gpu      256MB NVidia GeForce 8300 GS you have no chance of running anything decent.

256mb on the GPU and its a low end so i wouldnt be surprised if thats comeing out of your RAM

also, PC world are one of the worst companies around... stupidly overpriced.

spend a bit more and get something much better

ofcourse, if you build your own system you will get much better value... but as your looking at buying from PC worl im guessing you have no experience in home builds

Thanks for replying Jonny.

I've heard mixed reports from various forums, some people say that this card (the 8300 GS) should run FSX reasonably well. I know it's not high end though (even though it is part of the NVidia 8 Series) and I'll be looking to upgrade to an 8600 GTS ([i]

James building your own rig isn't as hard as people would like you to think. It also saves you money and gets you exactly what you want. It might be worth writing down what you want component wise and then surfing the net a little for best deals. You'll find you get a lot of help here with building and stuff as a number of us do it ;)

I actually work with someone who offered to put together a rig for me for "a couple of pints", but I honestly don't have a clue what I'm looking for. I don't claim to be a computer whizz, all I know is bigger numbers tend to be better.

If I were to buy all the parts myself, are there any websites similar to NewEgg for the UK? I have Egg open now and I'll take a look at that when I get back from the shop in 10 minutes.
Any and all help is really appreciated here!

in the uk the best are

www.overclockers.co.uk - very good delivery, and customer service

www.ebuyer.co.uk - also very good

www.aria.com - ive had no experience with them but are apparently good

in your PC do you need everything... case, internal components, peripherals and monitor. because if you have someone who is willing to wack all the bits together for you, its worth looking into a homebuild because as ozzy said you will get more bang for your buck plus its exactly what YOU want.

It will be very difficult for you to build a system capable of running FSX really well
