lol. Those are wayyyy to expensive for me right now. I'll have to wait a couple of days to think about what I should do. After that, I'll come back to bother you guys some more. At least I have an idea of what I want to get and do with it. Thanks for all the help guys! :)

DDR2 800 is the slowest you want for a quad core and still have it give you a good clock but like I said there is learning involved so buying fast memory when you wont be using its potential is a waste. I think you will be fine with 800. With the rebate on that 1066 Crucial stuff its about the same price as the 800 but you cant use it at 1066 without clocking. It does not plug into the motherboard and magically run 1066, you have to set it up in the BIOS to do that. Its the same with 800.

If you get a 1333 FSB processor that means the default memory speed will be 333.5 or DDR2 667.

If you get a 1066 FSB processor that means the default memory speed will be 266.5 or DDR2 533.

The default memory speed of the motherboard will be based on FSB divided by 4 (and then multiply that answer x2 for the DDR2 rating)

It's up to you to go into the bios for the motherboard and set it up so the DDR2 800 (runs 400-MHz) or 1066 (runs 533-Mhz) memory is running the right rated speed and timing, it dont do it all by itself

Ok so let's say I bought that system now with the Q6600 as my processor with its 1066FSB and the RAM at 1066 DDR2. Would I be able to overclock them both to good settings that work well together just by you guys telling me what numbers to plug into the BIOS? Or do I actually have to have knowledge in order to do this? I'm not afraid to test it myself and learn how to do this, it interests me and I've been wanting to learn how to for a while. But if I have to learn, you guys have to teach me and I don't know if you're willing to put up that time.

I would not even begin to try and tell someone what numbers to use mainly because I am just learning how to run Intel myslef. I am sure others may who know more about it than me my make suggestions but you have to know what you are doing to clock and monitor the temps for signs of trouble. You also have to know what to do if crashes start appearing and how to tweak it down.

I am afraid that is something I would not want to get in the middle of. Someone much wiser than me said that clocking is not something that is very wise to do unless you are willing to accept the risks and want to learn. Even then it can be a disaster if you are not watching things right.

I see. So how about this build? I'm still trying to get the hang of it.

Same case without power supply
PSU: pc power 750
cpu: q6600 2.4ghz
mobo: asus p5k p35
ram: 2gb crucial ballistix 240pin ddr2 800
same GPU (640mb geforce 8800gts)

any better? i also threw in that zalman cooler with the thermal compound. i'll have to get one of my friends who knows how to overclock to do it for me cus i don't want to mess that up.

Very good.

Just a point to make... the Zalman and thermal compound are there only for added protection... you do not necessarily have to overclock your CPU. The stock fan on the Q is very noisy and not as efficient. Replacing the stock thermal paste and heat sink will make your CPU run much cooler.

Yea I know. I don't like having them run hot because it brings down their lifetime (I think?). That RAM I'm actually going to buy 1066 and not 800, and clock it up to 1200 like miltest said, if possible. I might get water cooling later on if I'm able to come up with the green. But as for now, I'm just waiting on someone to buy my current rig so I can get the other one. I have a few people interested and some ads up online. Hopefully someone goes with it.
