Postby machineman9 » Sat Aug 18, 2007 7:07 am

would you say this is a good upgrade? ATi Radeon X1650 (512mb) to a  nVidia 8600GTS (512mb)

ive only done RAM upgrades before, so does anyone have any guides that they used which you could reccomend to me?

also, the only place ive seen sell one of these for a reasonable price is eBay. anyone know a british place that sells a 512mb version of the 8600GTS for about

That is the same card. I got confused about the memory clocks when I bought, but Nick N set me straight ;)

The 2000Mhz memory clock from the eBay one is the same speed at the one I recommended. It's something to do with 2 clocks per second, so the posted specs by the manufacturer is 2000Mhz, but in reality it runs at 1000Mhz x 2.

Confusing, I know ;)

I'm sure Nick or someone else will drop by and explain in greater detail, but anyway, both those cards are EXACTLY the same.

Regards,
celtman

Edit: The package contents of that card are exactly the same as the one I recommended. It looks like they copied the specs off that site ;)

If you don't know what to do, then use that. It's simple really -

1. Uninstall old drivers, replace graphics card (simple pull out one, plug in other)
2. connect monitor
3. insert CD that came with graphics card and install the drivers from that.
4.You might also want to check the nVidia for website for the latest drivers for that card.

Also, don't forget to unplug your PC from the wall socket when replacing the card - you could get a nasty shock if you don't ;)

also, you might want to get rid of your ati drivers properly, Xp doesn't actually get rid of them, i've used this program for ages now and works just fine for removing various drivers:
