Will this be a good system?

Postby Fsx flyer » Wed Aug 15, 2007 12:23 pm

Yesterday I ordered an XPS 410 from Dell. Just read my signature (below). I need to know if the graphics card is OK and what my performance will be. For example, 15 fps at most medium settings. That kind of stuff.

Edit: Forgot to say, I would really like to know performance is FS9 and FSX, I got FS9 a few days ago just because there are sooo many cool things you can download for it.

I have a Dell XPS 410 with 2.00 GHZ intel duo core processor. 256 Nvidia 8600GT. 2gb ram @ 667 mhz I think.

You will do 2x as good on FS9 as FSX in the way of performance and visuals.

You will be restriced with FSX in the way of scenery elements in order to get frames

FSX is different from FS9 in how it renders frames and how smooth low frame rates are in comparison. Once you hit the 20FPS mark in FSX your frames start to run very smooth as comapared to 24-30 in FS9. 18 frames in FS9 is usually very choppy, 18 frames in FSX tends to be much, much smoother.

Do you know if it is a bad graphics card? I have seen some issues with the GTS that have something to do with Direct X 10, but this is the GT, so probably different.

The card provides less performance than a 7900GT, the DX10 core makes no difference.

You would be faster on a 7900GT 256 than a 8600 256 if that gives you a perspective.

A 7950GT 256 would be even faster than a 7900GT mainly because it provides 24 pixel pipes over 20 from the 7900 and if you select the right one, a faster core and memory speed. The 7950GT 512 is even better for FSX because of the 512 VM but is difficult to find right now on PCIe. There are plenty of AGP versions available but not PCIe.

If I was going to buy a budget 8000 series card, it would not be anything less than the 8800GTS 320 with a 550+ core speed and a 1700+ memory speed with the 320-bit memory interface. It also has 96PPL combined shaders which is really about 36-48 but far greater than 24. The more PPL the card has the more efficient and better it is in 3D.

With that you would pretty much chew through FS9 and be able to run FSX much better.

Do you know much about the 7300 LE 256mb? That is what is on a previous computer. I would like to know what the differences are and what gives better performance in FSX and FS9
