They need to be with the current specs they are trying to achieve. The small the fab the less power(lesss heat) it needs and the more you can fit on die. As long as you want to see more cores be added they will need to make it smaller. I wonder how small we can go before it becomes impossible to get any smaller.

considering the current layout of tranistors and supporting circuits in full scale is somewhere around several basketball courts before being reduced, quite a ways

as for how far.. hmmmmm

well, I can tell you that 20nm with double the current processor ability is not,... completely
