I run Sonar 6 pro software amongst others music software on a Compaq Presario V3000 and Windows XP Home with a AMD 64 and it works great.
Cost of laptop last fall was $700 so you should be able to find something similar for far less.

You also got to consider the software you already have, you wouldn't want to go out and have to purchase Mac capable software costing $300+ on top of the cost of a laptop ;)

I never implied you build a laptop from scratch. It can be done but not very economic for people beond mega-geek status. You can however buy a barebone wich is basically a lap top missing an os, cpu, ram and maybe some other components. Then you find your needed parts cheap.
Maybe when Apple puts their prices in a reasonable range I can look at them. The last ad I saw for an Apple computer was on their site and was saying something like "...and with the 64mb ATI graphic chipset you have the power you need to run even the most demanding games such as Doom 3." I about fell out of my chair... One of tjhe best jobs I have ever had was when we were re-netowrking a school system and we were getting rid or all of the macs, we had to get the HDD out and since it takes a year to unscrew them we just took hammers to em.  ;D
