HD question.

Hi!! I know that in a HD there are particions , boot records and all that, but why on a HD (Seagate) with 160 gb we only have 149 gb avail (11 gb ) and on  a 80 gb (Western Digital ) we only have 74,5 gb avail for what?? Am i doing anything wrong with fdisk and format???

This is a problem because Windows Views one gig as 1024MB and hardware companies view it as 1000MB or the other way around, I can't seem to remember, But it is completely normal my 250 reads 232 gigs I think.

I think it's a matter of bits and bytes, there is a difference. HDD's are rated in the more uncommon measurement, so they look smaller by the more common measurement.

Many thanks for fast reply. But is there any way to go around this, not that im that worried but is there a way of getting those "lost" gb.

They are not lost, they were never there to start with, it's just that data in windows uses a different measurement.

It's like 50 millimetres sounds bigger than 2 inches, they are the same length though.

2 Inches is bigger than 50mm, by 0.8mm..  ;)
