Upgrade Suggestions

Postby Celtman » Sat Jun 09, 2007 7:29 am

Hi,

I am thinking on upgrading my current system, as it kinda sucks at some games right now. Any suggestions / mods to the upgrade are muh appreciated - I don't know that much about this stuff so may end up buying the wrong thing  ;D

Anyway, current specs are:

Motherboard: Asus P8N Sli Deluxe
RAM: 2x 512Mb DDR PC3200 400Mhz 184 Pin SDRAM
Processer: AMD Athlon X2 3800+ Oc'ed @ 2.2Ghz
Graphics Card: ATi X1600 512 Mb  :(
OS: Windows XP Home
PSU: 550W
Cooling: 4x Cooling fans in case (do these do anything?!?)

Looking to upgrade to:
Same Motherboard
RAM: 4x 1Gb Samsung DDR PC3200 400Mhz 184 Pinn SDRAM
Processer: AMD Athlon X2 4800+
Graphics Card: BFG 8800 GTS OC 320MB DDR3 DVI PCI-E Graphics Card
OS: Vista Home Premium

Budget is about

Use Corsair XMS, OCZ Titanium, or Crucial Ballistix insted of that samgsung RAM. Also eVGA cards are much better than the BFG one.

Thanks for the advice Cameron.

Will DDR2 memory work on my motherboard? Or how can I find out if it will?

Thanks.

No... DDR is 184 pin.. DDR2 is 240 pin.

AMD socket 939 supports DDR RAM, AM2 supports DDR2 (hence the "2").. some old Intel s775 boards supported both and had slots for both, but as far as AMD is concerned, it's one or the other..

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong..

Is it worth getting a new motherboard and different processer for DDR2, or should I stick with DDR?

Thanks

Well DDR2 is much cheaper than DDR, and soon we are going to see a phase change much like PC100 to PC2k. PC100 and PC133 RAM exist, in small amounts, small sticks and high prices.
