Video Card upgrade

Postby Gunny04 » Thu Jun 07, 2007 11:36 am

In about 20 days or so I'll be purchasing a new Video card, I know for sure I can fit an 8600GTS in my case no questions asked, But my question is can I manage to throw a 8800GTS in, at 9 inches long.... I did the measurements and took a picture, I'll run into a hard drive no doubt, but will the card be fine, or will I have to move the drive down a little, and if so how bad will the heat be? Heres a picture

Image

Just curious, I want the best card I can get, but.... I dunno if I'll be able to fit the beast, I need a PSU as well but thats covered so far I think.

Gunny if you can move the HD up a little bit as heat is bad for circuits and heat rises ;) I'd also consider upgrading your fan for better cooling.

Which fan? I cant move the drives up..... That requires tearing the motherboard out, luckily the last time was covered by waranty when it smoked on me, The only fan in the case is the CPU cooler which is crappy but sufficient for what it does, if you mean add a case fan, I intend to when I get the video card.

Case didn't come with a case fan, only the Aluminum cooler for the CPU (Which has a fan on it, the only one in the case) The hard drives run anywhere from 44C on a cold day to 55-60C on a hot day when loading, I know I need a case fan but.... I haven't gotten around to it yet, giving I only payed 500 for the computer it came with nothing extra. Case fan is on my list of stuff to get with the Video card.

I say as long as you have somewhere to move that drive, the GTS looks like it will fit fine judging by your picture.  How many 3.5 slots do you have open?

hmm 3.5 bays you mean the hard drive bays? I believe 4 or 5, problem is you put your hard drives in before the motherboard, Getting that IDE in there was a pain, but I think I can move the Sata drive (bottom one) One slot lower, or just lay it down under the graphics card if I had long enough power cables, but I am not certain.

EDIT: This is a picture of my entire case (Don't mind the dust on the heatsink, or the rats nest of wiring, The PSU wires are rather short)

It's been done, I managed to force the IDE drive the top, and slide the Sata drive to the bottom most, Now.... Do you think I can fit that 8800GTS 640MB in there or no? here's a picture

If you tidy up the cables I reckon it'll fit. Tight but it'll fit (of course that could be the angle of the photo). The only sure way is to get out Mr. Tapemeasure ;)
You could try Dr. Ozzys old trick. Make a cardboard cut-out that is the same size as the new board. Then try and slot it in and see that there is enough play in the cables for it to fit ;)

The cables are stretched to the max, I am buying a new one, a 300FSP (Forton source) power supply will not power an 8800GTS, so once I get a new PSU I'll tidy the cables up and shuffle the IDE's around, I have 9 inches of space, but was wondering if the cooler on the card would bump the drives or not, I don't think so as there is a good 4-6 inches between the drives now!  ;D Heat on the drives should no longer be as bad, but I think I can fit the card in there tight, but it should fit!
