The Hiper has died.

Postby ctjoyce » Mon May 07, 2007 9:38 pm

Yes boys thats right, my Hiper Type R has finally kicked the bucket. After three years of loyal service she has finally died. So now I need to get a new one by the  end of the week. What to buy what to buy. Remember that I only need this PSU for this current rig, as after I am done with her, she goes to my little sister.

So according to the Antec PSU calculator (excellent little gauge) I have figured out that I need about a 620W supply to maintain the system, this means that I am going to get a 750W or greator one....and the best one I can find under $200 is the Thermaltake Toughpower 750W.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817153038

Now it doesn't have the 4 12V rails of the Earnmax 750, but I really can't afford to dump another $230 into this system, $175 is good enough.

Cheers

want some advice?

Do not buy the PSU for this system, but for the next one and use it to run this one in the mean time

quite silly to spend 200 bucks on that multi-rail garbage when you can get a single rail 750 PC Power and Cooling for the same price http://www.pcpower.com/products/viewpro ... show=S75QB AND it is rated to run 850 peak and guaranteed to give you 750 constant... that other junk you are lucky if their 750 model will give you a true 600watts in continuous

and the PC P&C WILL come with the 6-8 pin ATI connector too

You wont be able to run 2 XTX.. but you might, just might skim by on 2 XT's on that PSU.

It will smoke any dual Nvidia has and run it till it screams

As a reference I still have 7-10 year old PCP&C units running. That hiper is just that.. hipe. You will be the about the 20th person I have seen report that PSU smoke and dont tell me it was a design they fixed. LOL

Thanks for the suggestions guys, and I will apply them for my next rig, but again, the PSU thats going to go into this rig stays in it, and my DX10 / Quad rig is getting its own 1KW supply.

So I'll do some further resurch, but this may be a bit too much PSU for my current setup.

Cheers

DX10 quad rig?  Are you also going for that?

I'm curious, is it going to be Quad-core CPU, and Four GPUs (SLI obviously), or just four CPUs?

And 4Gb of RAM, or 8Gb of RAM (or less)?

I'm curious, because I'm also doing a DX10 Quad-Everything Rig.  With a PCP&C 1000W PSU.

Wanna have a contest? ;D

Still does not compute Cam

Spend 175-200 today to power what you have and then turn around and dump another 350+ into a crap 1Kw PSU for later this year?  Just spend 5 bills and get the PC Power and Cooling 1Kw unit and never worry about it again.

That 1Kw you posted some weeks ago... bad news. Multi rail designs are not going to cut it for the future. With the video card now sensing the current on the line and throtting back because the rail is stressed, you are throwing money down the drain by purchasing a high watt multi rail unit. By the time you calculate the loss of power due to the rails and the drop-off point of the 5v-3.3v regulation, you are getting an 800-850watt PSU and some can not even keep up with the PCP&C 750. You get what you pay for and that is why those other 1Kw units are cheaper.

Spend the 5 bills and get the right PSU

Nick I get all of that, and trust me its going into the knowladge bank, But in less than a year this whole rig isn't going to be mine. Its going to be my sisters, so while I go for a 1.2KW PCP&C monster or 2x 850Watters for my next rig, this one just has to remain stable.

@Str1ker: Don't tempt me. I still want to go to college.

@Cam (who else): this rig im building is actually for my education, because im into programming (C++ and stuff like that), and I'm going to be making games and programs which will probably require both a lot of disk space, and a lot of computing power.

but its also just because i can :D

Ah taking care of little sis, huh

Then I guess you do need a supply for it that can not be removed. If she is not going to clock the rig and the cards.. then go with a cheapo and let her deal with a replacement later if it smokes. If you are trying to continue to clock that rig yourself for another 5 months.. you might as well do it right and tell sis if she wants a free-bie it needs a supply.

LOL

isnt that still the usually 1080 resolution, rather than something higher, like 2560x1600? :-?

I nearly went into apoplectic seizure at seeing Cameron actually ask for computer advice!! It throws everything I know and love about SimV into disarray. I am shocked!! Shocked, I say. When he asks for help, where does that put the rest of us?

Cameron and Nick N are gods...
emachines T6212; AMD Athlon64 3800+ (2.40 GHz; Venice core); Allied AL-B500E 500W power supply; 2048Mb PC3200 DDR400; Westinghouse LCM-22w2 wide-screen LCD monitor; eVGA e-GeForce 7900 GS KO X16 PCIe video card; Logitech Extreme 3D Pro flight controller;<
