For Richardd43

Postby Nick N » Mon Apr 23, 2007 12:22 pm

Well, I just upgraded to an AMD 6000, Asus Crosshair and Mushkin 6400 Extreme memory.

I am waiting to see what the next line of GPUs have to offer before I upgrade my graphics.

I am still running XP so I can use the 7950s in quad mode.

My question is, is it worth the time to tweak FSX to this system if I plan on upgrading the GPU to a DX-10 board.

Will the settings be that much different.

I am not a real fan of 3DMark06 but this thing hit 8900 out of the box and never went over 39 deg on the stock cooler. Seems to be a very stable setup.

If anyone is familiar with overclocking this board I would be interested in what settings you used.

Since your last thread went a bit sideways

Thanks Nick. I saw the PM but I have been extremely busy for the last couple of days and have not been able to get back to you.

Being an Alaskan and loving the water I am green with envy...

I will get the info you asked for and post back ASAP.

Smooth, Richard... I think we can do something with that. It's looking good already so you did set it up right to begin with.   ;)

I have all the info I need now.

We may need to go through a few resets to find the sweet spot on that memory and CPU.

Nice BIOS Richard. I can see where you may be getting a bit lost. That one has to be one of Asus's better creations with good control. We will not be putting the screws to the system so many of those settings will remain on AUTO with the exception of key values and I have to look up a few of them myself to confirm they are what they appear to be. Asus is famous for using the same name on a setting from one BIOS to another but changing its properties in relation to another setting or voltage scale. I also want to do a bit of research and find out if there are any calibration issues with the BIOS. Some Asus boards, such as with Vcore and Vdd, may deliver a lower or higher voltage than is set in the BIOS.

I won't worry about the kiddy warnings with you since you are an engineer already know the scoop on how to reset in case of a failure and check temps to ensure the processor is staying within limits.

I will do some research and post a set of preliminary settings to start the ball rolling. It may not be until this weekend. I will try and have something posted and finalize the things I want to review by Friday.

Well, being retired, time is not an issue for me. If you get busy no problem. Am sure you have a lot on your plate right now.

Funny thing about that... I use a portable sat uplink which is tied right into my ISP so prettly much no matter where I am, I have the net. Most people might think I spend a lot of time sitting at home but in the course of a day I may post here from 10 different locations. If I am not at the University of Washington, Seattle or around the MS campus or at my office, I am usually on the boat. I only post from home very early in the morning or very late at night.

The multiplier can be changed from 15 downward. I set it at 14 and got the memory back to 400 but the CPU dropped considerably. Clocked it back up but was not sure about my settings.

After I ran some tests I reset everything back to normal (except the memory, I left it at 4, 4, 3,10, T1 at 2.0V. The memory is rated at 1.9 - 2.1 volts but I have no idea if that is writted in stone or not.

I will have to go to the store and buy a new cooler. Am not sure my old cooler will fit.

Unless you have a better suggestion, I am thinking I might buy the Zalman 9500 HSF.

@ 125+ watts you will need a good one. Most off the shelf standard block design HS are not up to the task. You also need the 4pin CPU fan support for full control of the fan speed.

Some design suggestions would be:

I think the 9500 is not quite up to the task and it only has a 3pin fan plug

The 9700 would be my first choice

Here is another possible choice.. I think probably easier to install than the Freezer pro 64 or the 9700 because it uses a top clip and will not require the motherboard be removed. The 9700 would still be my first choice

What ever you come up with, when installed the fan wants to push air toward the back of the tower where the rear tower fans will draw the hot air out (expell) right away. Make sure it is rotated correcly for that purpose. The Thermaltake may not position that way but the 9700 and AC Frz 64 should position just fine.

My Silverstone case draws air in from the back and exhausts out the top so the 9500 on my other MB points straight up.. Is kind of wierd looking when you first see the fan mounted.

Because both PSUs sit in the bottom of the case they have their own cooling system. The HHD case draws air from vents in one side of the case and exhaust out the other side, never entering the motherboard area. There are also intake fans in the front of the case.

Did I mention it is a little loud????

Not bad. I expected to see 60c+ @ 1.625v assuming that is the AMD stock cooler and pad you are running. The pads are worthless and really do not help. A chemical bond takes place with them and AMD used that method as way of idiot proofing the instal of the compound.

Even if I use the stock cooler, prior to installing I always remove the TIM pad, shine up the base of the heat sink with a good metal polish, clean it and the cpu with alcohol, apply AS in a small dot (about 3 grains of rice in size) in the center of the die and rotate the heat sink a bit left to right after it is clipped down and installed to spread the compound.

I am not sure if the 9500 would move more heat or not. I know the 9700 would but the 9500 was never intended for a 125watt processor. I ran a 939 X2 4800+ (110watt) overclocked on the 9500 AM2 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6835118004
