DVD/CD RW

Postby Bubblehead » Mon Apr 30, 2007 12:40 am

I just installed a Lite-on DVD/RW Combo in an older HP Pavilion PC with Win98SE. Althought the PC recognizes the optical drive, I can't seem to make it work as design such as playing dvd, copying to a disc (CD), etc. Do I need a special software for this? Will Nero 7 work?

You have to remember that back in the good old days of 98 there weren't DVD ROMs!
Nero 7 should allow you to burn disks without any trouble. You'll need to look around for a suitable DVD player (I use ASUS as it came with my graphics card and I'm well pleased with it) ;) However before you do all that you'll need to find a Windows 98SE compatible driver for your DVD ROM ;)
A good place to start might be http://www.nodevice.com/driver/company/ ... D-ROM.html

Ozzie:   Thanks for the input. Perhaps if I explain what I'm trying to do, I or someone can figure out a simpler way to achieve it.

I have an HP Pavilion 6370 with Win98SE. I am donating it to a Middle School here in San Diego. However, I need to copy some important files and then delete them permanently. It had a CD-ROM but I decided to install the DVD/CD-R/RW which apparently was a mistake due to the system incompatibility. So I'm re-installing the CD-ROM.

There's one other option to copy the files. The PC has two USB ports. I tried to insert a flash drive but the PC started looking for a USB Removable Device Driver. Know where I can download one? Because the PC is not connected to the internet, whatever driver I download I have to copy it to a floppy in this PC and just load it to the HP computer. Will this work?

Got it!  I have a Seagate USB External HD and in the User Manual it listed a website to download WIN98SE drivers. I downloaded it to this PC and unsipped it to a floppy. Went to load it  in the HP computer and Alleluhia Brothers! it worked. Now when I insert a flash drive, the PC recognizes it. Alls well that ends well. I'll hang on to the floppy with the 98SE USB Mass storage driver...just in case.
