Low latency ram

Hello all,

  I noticed since I have started putting scenery add-ons into FS9 my frame rates are dropping a bit. Over all it runs OK but once and awhile it will stick for about 1/2 second or so. Im running a P4 2.9 GHZ cpu 1gig ram and 80gig hd with raid(2 40gigers) and nvidia 6600gt AGP 256mb.

  Im wondering if I got some low latency ram do you think that would get rid of some of the choppiness? Its not dual channel ram.

I doubt it would help at all, at least not that you would notice, the 1/2 second lag would be attributable to other factors.

Why isn't your ram running in dual channel mode, wrong chipset or odd ram sticks?

...does your Hard Drive light come on during the pause...?

If so, it may indicate that you don't have enough RAM installed to contain the complete program...(try 2 Gig!)...
...and your required data is being (slowly) spooled off your HDD instead of (fast) RAM.... ...!

I had exactly the same problem until I installed more RAM....(no more pauses!)......!

First its an older style motherboard and it dosnt support dual channel ram.  :'(    I might give 2 gig a try and dump the xtra money for better ram this time. Thats basically what happens its pulling from the HDD which would be even slower if not for the RAID config. And the ram thats in there was the cheapest I could find at tigerdirect.

I wish microsoft would put out an embedded OS just for gaming, I think that would help out alot too(keep dreaming). Since my PC is dedicated to FS Im wondering what kind of processes I could kill to get some extra performance?

Configure it to shutdown any programs not required, before starting FS 2004.

Pop the FS Autostart Icon on your desktop next to your FS 2004 Icon......!

   Installed and tested and right away things are running better, when I have more time Ill go thru and completely optimize the software. Could be my imagination but the terrain textures look like they are drawing a bit farther too. Paying more attention to the 1/2  pauses it looks like when it updates the terrain textures and when there is tons of autogen around. I may try clocking the ram a bit hopefully i can get it to run stable enough.

Try reducing your sight/visible distance to 20-30 miles (or even less) in the Weather/Distance option.

There is no point in rendering complex scenery in the far distance....most unrealistic....!!

You car rarely see distant detail when in the air....Mist - Fog - Dust, etc...!

OK... you MUST work on finding the thread done by NickN sometaime maybe last fall about setting up WinXP and a machine for gaming.  It is one of the most useful postings on this whole site IMHO.

I do not know where it is at the moment.... but I THINK it is in the FSX forum.  Maybe someone else knows?

I used to use FSAutostart... until Nick did those postings.  And if you go with FSAutostart...... with 2 gigs.... Nick says it causes problems, not fixes anything.  I know that it now causes crashes on my machine since I went to 2 gigs RAM (dual channel).

Spend some time searching if someone else does not post about it first.  Try the "view the last X posts by this person" function.

1+1 Gb Dual Channel DDR RAM + 256 Mb RAM (3 slots)
Win XP.
FS 2004.

No problemo...sweet as a nut......!

Wow thanks for this guys, Im gonna have to print this out and give it a try, good that you brought it back up could help alot more noob's like me, could learn a bit more about my puter too.

He has my vote as tweaker of the year! FS Autostart, I have to admit, did a pretty good job. But following Nicks instructions did work alot better. I still didnt defrag and clean up the registry which will give me a bit more.

I also setup the bank interleave on my memory and the latency is now set at 3 I guess that had some impact. Still gonna pick up another gig when I finally get around to buying the 10m mesh.
