If you had to pick...

Postby Splat762 » Mon Apr 16, 2007 1:57 pm

...between a new system with a single 768MB Geforce 8800 GTX or duel 512MB Geforce 7950 GT's....which would you get?  ;D

I know the 8800 will be DX10 ready but will the sure horsepower of the 1GB worth of memory from the 7950's blow it out of the water?  Oh and will be running 2GB of DDR with it...

Go for the 8800.

There is practically no advantage of the 7950GX2 over the 8800.

last i read, 2 7900's in SLI are faster than a 8800.....

and 7950's are faster...

I figure I should go with the 8800 for the DX10 potential?

This is what I'm looking at so far...

Intel Duo Core E6400 2.14 with 1066mhz FSB CPU...

Corsair XMS2 Xtreme w/Heat Spreader 2048MB DDR2-800 PC6400 memory

I would swap the 200GB and 150GB Raptor as the Raptor is the fastest of the two ...

I have a that Raptor too; it's my C: with only Windows XP Pro SP2 and FS9 installed on it. I have a 300 GB Maxtor which I devided into a couple of partitions so I have a D: for programs like Office, Creative Suite and Visual Studio an E: for My Documents, F: for other games, G: for Music etc.

I also recently bought an 500 GB external HDD for all the stuff I need to back up (like all my Fligth Simulator add-ons ;D)

I'm happy with this setup ... works for me.

WAIT FOR G81!!!!!

What currently is DX10? Are you going to rush out to buy up every DX10 game as soon as it comes out IN SEPTEMBER?

If you answered NO to any or all of these questions then buy the 7950GTs. See this is my problem, you look at what a single 8800GTS vs a pair of 7950s can do, and its no contest.

Wait for all of the technology TO ACTUALLY BE HERE both software and hardware THEN BUY.

Here Endith the rant.

he also thinks the 7950 GX2 is 1Gb...

its two cards in SLI, both with 512 MB!!!  not 1Gb.  SLI doesnt add the vid mem together, it merely puts the same info into each one.

in fact, if u buy two cards, both the same model, but one has slightly less memory, like one has 512MB, and the other has 256MB, then in SLI, both cards will, effectively, have only 256MB...

good thing nV didnt put different memory for each processor in the 7950 GX2 card eh?

look, if u want DX10, wait for better DX10 cards.  if u dont care much about DX10, then get DX9 card.  comprende?

Another thought, what motherboard are you using? You could be using a motherboard that is 8x x2 in SLi, so you don't end up getting your maximum GPU power. Also that 550W isn't going to be enough to power your rig.

Whats your budget? I'll design something for you that will maximize performance for your budget.

I would wait a few months then choose between a refresh of the R600 (RV650?), G80 (G81?), or a second hand 8800GTX. As Counter Terrorist Joyce Cam said, why buy when the technology isn't here? It's pointless. By the time games bring dual 7950's to there knees, the G81 will be out as well as the new AMDs which apparently beat the Core 2 duo by 40% or more.

So if you wait a few months you may get a rig upto 40% faster? If you don't want it faster than a current computer you could halve the price of your computer. Not bad for a couple of months. As an example my friend bought a 7800GTX a month after I got my X850XTPE. Back then I got 60fps in ALL games, and he got 85fps in ALL games? When games FINALLY came out which caused my card to struggle and the 7800 to run perfectly, the 7900GT was out which costed $220.

My friend pretty much wasted a huge amount of money. He should of gotten a cheap 6600GT then buy a 7900GT a couple of months down the road. That way he would of saved a huge amount of money.

I am only saying this because I wasted allot of money because I bought a X850XTPE at the end of its life before the G70 took over. My friend bought a 7800GTX and then got overtook by cards costing less than half as much. What I SHOULD of done was buy a X850XT as soon as it came out, saving money, and with the money I saved I should of bought a faster Pentium 4 661.

48 pixles per second vs. DX10

Wa? I think you mean how each 7950 has 24 pipelines and dual = 48..... Well the core clock is something like 650mhz which is allittle more than 48 pixels are second.... Oh, and for someone else, I understand the Geforce 8 doesn't really have 'pipelines', but if it did, how many would it have? 36?

Actually, you don't need DDR2-1000 to achieve maximum clock. The XMS sticks I currently have cost $230 and outpreform many DDR2-1000 sticks on the market.

As for the cards: http://techreport.com/reviews/2007q1/ge ... dex.x?pg=4

For the price of a single 8800GTS I can buy 2 7950GTs and outpreform it. So am I still a rich a$$ for going SLi insted of one overpriced card?

I rushed the post. Re-read it.

At lower resolutions (at or under 1280x1024) a single 7950 will max out most new games. I would rather get one then buy a G81 or something later in the year. BUT. That is just me.
