Am I Overdoing It?

Postby NDSP » Fri Apr 06, 2007 6:53 pm

I currently have a Dell E510, and it seems that my computer is straining to run FS9 with my addons

Currently, I have The AI [American] Traffic pack from the V installed with Real Environment Pro, and about 10-15 addon aircraft. But it seems that my computer is straining to run the program... as in I have it set to 100FPS when im only getting around 20.. and I know that before I had these addons installed, i could get well over 60... and the fact that all of a sudden.. i cant run any other programs with it because then my computer freezes....

If anyone can spare some advice.. then

Would you know that it's only 20fps without checking ?  20 and above is pretty smooth.

Anyway, that Dell probably has a pretty weak video-card, unless you've upgraded it. So yes.. all those ad-ons are a little too much.

First of all reduce your FPS settings to 24. That's more than enough. Putting it on 100 or unlimited uses unnecessary resources. Your add-ons will probably not slow down your system. Any program running in the background will. Close all applications before you start FS.

Crash ;)

But Before all of the addons, I was getting 60+ FPS

That is because the default FS doesn't use that much computer resources.

What add-ons do you have? Scenery add-ons like airport will slow down your frames a little (some a lot). Because they are more complex then the default MS scenery your computer needs more computing power to render them. Some add-on aircraft will cause a drop in FPS (Spot view or VC) because of the way it is made (number of polygons) or the way it was painted (32-bit or DTX-3).

Like I said before trying to get more than 24 FPS in rubbish. Want to see how much 24 FPS is? Turn on your television.

Well I just reinstalled FS9 without the add-ons and now I'm back to 60FPS again. Now all I am going to do is reinstall the aircraft that I can't live without and hope for the best  ;)

Try locking it at 28fps. It should be just as smooth with less blurries and stutters.  ;)

The way I understand it, when you lock the FPS to a lower acceptable number, that frees up your CPU to do other things, such as........process all your add-ons.  Just because you can run at 100 FPS or even 60FPS doesn't mean you should.  Your eyes can only detect induividual frames at about 25 FPS or less.  FS9 puts a high priority of processing  screen framerate.  If you set it at about 28 as was previously mentioned, you're telling FS9 that it can free up extra CPU cycles to do other things, such as process your add-ons.
