I dont think you can upgrade to anything. As I recall the Dimension 2400 series has no AGP or PCIe ports and you are stuck on the integrated graphics chip.

you are stuck. Although it has PCI slots, I recall something about the D2400 where a PCI video card wont work right. It was not designed to be a game rig, only business applications.


Even if you did get a PCI card to run, you are better off on the integrated port because the communication bus is faster. I do not think DX9 will run from PCI but it has been a long time since I looked into that so I may be wrong.

You can not run DX10 on anything like that tower. It will require a new PCIe game rig running Window vista for DX10

I think the purchase of a PCI card would be a waste of money> It would be better spent replacing the tower with one that has what you need, a PCIe slot, video card, a good CPU and the right motherboard and memory.

I happen to know about this because I have one of those low end PC's with the so-called Intel Extreme Graphics, complete with the shared memory!  

I upgraded it to pretty close to the max the hardware will allow.  In fact, my 1st upgrade was the graphics card.  I notice 3D performance boost immediately.  I'm on my 3rd graphics card now, the Geforce 5500.  I know it's modest, but I'm satisfied for now.  So far, I still have some life in it before I buy another machine, so, for the time being, I'm good.

And re: the Best Buy employee, I was near a conversation where a guy wanted to buy a PCI card with S-video out so he could use his TV.  The Best Buy employee told him that he was pretty much screwed.  There's a few PCI cards with S-Video.  I waited until the employee walked off and told the guy what he needed to know.

DX9 or greater with advanced animations enabled for jetways

as dcunning30 pointed out, he has a system like yours and knows the PCI card will work, so a PCI video card is what you need

On many of those boards you must turn off the integrated grahpics controller in the BIOS after you install a PCI video card. Some BIOS's require you also enable the PCI as a primary video adapter. I do not know that BIOS but I would bet you will need to do one or both. Perhaps dcunning30 can confirm that.

Yes, you do have to turn off the on board video throught the BIOS if you're going to use a PCI card.  Install the card 1st, boot then go to the BIOS and turn off the on-board setting.  Your computer will recognize the new card, even though you haven't installed the drivers yet.  And be sure to make sure your monitor cable is plugged to the card and not the on-board video.  It seems obvious, but it had me scratching my head for a couple of minutes!  LOL!!!

BTW, re: the on board video outperforming a PCI card, that's new to me.  where did you learn that?  When I did my research, I visited the Intel site and read the 845 specs and visited tomshardware.com, but that was some time ago.
