I am running Firefox with some web developer extensions running for about 6 hours now and I am not using anywhere near 60Mb.
When surfing the web most stuff is stored in the browsers cache and in temp files.
As for RAM you should expect to be using between 60-80mb of memory depending on which browser your using and what your doing at the time.
To avoid unnecessary memory usage there are many things you can do, such as shutting down any applications your not using at the time, controlling your start up programs, and making sure your free of viruses or spy ware, to completely shutting down your computer and restarting (not rebooting) from time to time for example.
You will find many ways searching the web for freeing memory but use caution following some of the tweaks, or using programs that claim to free memory, in many cases it is useless.
