My dad has a G5 he bought in August of 2005. I have two sticks of 256Mb RAM that I think will work in his machine if we can figure out what mobo he has in it. He added 512Mb to the existing 512 that was in it at the time of purchase. He hit www.belarc.com tonight to get a look-see inside, but it only says that DIMM0 and DIMM1 are filled. I should think a mac would have more than two RAM slots, wouldn't you? His machine has an ATI Radeon 9600 (assumably 8X AGP) if that info will help identify the machine further for those of you who use them.
Go to the URL up there and click on Free Download once you get there to see what-all is in your machine...

If the ram fits it won't hurt to try it. If it's not compatible, it will either not fit the slots or not work. You won't damage anything in the attempt.
If it's dual channel ram, you might bugger up dual channel mode fitting the extra sticks and cause a performance drop. Over 1gb ram will not give any benefits unless his apps require massive ram amounts.

It's both PC3200 DDR400 RAM that I have and that he is using in his machine. We are trying to figure out if there are four slots on the mobo or just two. There seems to be no way to discover what mainboard is in it...

Eight RAM slots?!! I am blown away-- truly. belarc.com told us the processor was a 2.00 Ghz thing. I am surprised it is so slow if the board is a server board. It does take some noticeable time for the machine to boot. I haven't used it in more than a year, so I don't remember exactly if one would call it a "fast" machine or not. Is there anywhere I can look up a picture of the board? Is the RAM dual channel?
Thanks, ct...

Thanks for the pic, ct. Unfortunately, that doesn't look like what my pop has. He has one of those all-in-one things with the monitor and everything in one construction that is little larger than an LCD monitor alone. Maybe it's not called a Powermac G5; maybe it's a PowerPC G5 or something...

Now we are getting somewhere!! Now that you mention it, it IS an iMac. I don't bother to even cast a disparaging glance at anything mac, so I could not remember what its exact nomenclature is. So-- we have determined that it has four RAM slots, which means the 2 x 256Mb sticks I have can indeed be installed and my dad's RAM be increased by 50% for free. Thanks for your help, ct.
