Please, please help, can I run this...

Postby therealzebraman » Tue Feb 20, 2007 9:54 pm

I have FS9 and have played it casually due to my computers specs. I have:
Intel P4 2.4ghz
512mb RAM (soon to be 1gb)
64mb on board graphics card (the thing I'm definately going to upgrade)

Ok, I live in the UK so you know. I am wondering if 1gb of RAM and most certainly a graphics card upgrade will help running FS9. I can run it on medium/low settings with 24+FPS. Is it my graphics card holding me back from the high settings, or is my CPU to weak to achieve those dream weather effects and such I've always hoped for. So I want to know what graphics card to get (most I'm willing to spend is

hello well your computer seems pretty good compared to mine see my post how will FS9 run it goes into detail on how mine would work, and my comp is wrse than urs except for the video card which u r going to change, but i think it would run pretty smoothly as soon as you get your graphics card, but it wont be too bad right now, but try it theres no harm might as well. have fun good luck.

notice: all i have said comes from someone who know not too much about flight simulation, but i think im reliable.

Well, I have this  http://www.dabs.com/ProductView.aspx?Quicklinx=45DW&CategorySelectedId=11137&PageMode=1&NavigationKey=11137,380050000&InMerch=1&v=2#infoarea
as you can see it's already overclocked (should be 560, this is 590 MHz core speed) and I have ALL sliders to maximum on Fs9. Every one.....HOWEVER..I've just noticed this even more overclocked on on the same page..( new to that page that I wished I'd bought)..

Which, as you can see is overclocked to 650 Mhz. And it's only

Great. So will the 650mhz overclocked run fine in my machine with no extra fans? And I have found what I'm looking for in a DVI to VGA converter so I can hook it up. Now I just got to open up my machine and check the PCI-E slot and then buy it. I'm not far away from my Sim dreams now  :).

Ok, I only have an AGP slot  >:(. Am I at a disadvantage using this and leaving it for FS9 or would upgrading the motherboard and processor, along with a PCI-E card be advisable. I'm not sure what to do, if an AGP card will do just aswell and have high settings then I would consider that but I would like to know how much it would cost to upgrade to a decent motherboard and new processor while I'm there. I've got

I know, that PCI-E is kicking AGP in the pants over, and over.  One day, no one will say, hey lets make another AGP card for the hell of it.

Trust me, if you want to upgrade, say bye bye to AGP...

AGP is fine for FS9 but it will be left behind for DX10 games over the next year and for FSX it will be a bit slow, but will work ok.

Your choice is to purchase a 7800GS AGP 256mb (or 512mb) and realize that you will not be able to run DX10 games untill you replace the motherboard/CPU/Memory/video card

I would go with a E6700 processor and build around that. As for motherboards, someone else would have to make a suggestion but in any case the Core2 Duo is the processor to base that decision on and build from there. By doing so you are opening the door for upgrades over time and your dad will need to get the right DDR2 memory and the right speed for it. You can go with a slower Core2 Duo but I would not go less than the E6400-E6600

Look, if you are looking no further than FS2004 then you can go for AGP. There are powerful AGP cards too... but don't think about FSX ;)

This is an excellent motherboard for the price
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?ASU-P5N32E
Go for the E6600 the E6700 is nearly twice the price
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?IL-E6600
Graphics card depending on what you've got left work your way down this list
nVidia 7950GT, 7900GT, 7900GS

(Not necessarily recommending Novatech..just went there to get the links.)
