Quick question, which hardware should i buy to be able to play FSX? I am about to buy a new computer and i was wondering if somebody could give me a liitle piece of advise. i've played FS for 10 years so i want to FSX to be as real as ti can get. Thanks.

As real as you can get it means spending what the posts above suggest and expect to upgrade the video card sometime during the year. The 8800 is a pre-release DX10 card and although it is the best thing going right now the ATI R600 and the G81 will be entering the market very soon. With the right motherboard the R600 will have the ability to address both SMP (dual and quad core) and multiple slug CPU's

ASUS Striker Extreme 680i
2GB OCZ Titanium DDR2-1000
1x 15GB WD Raptor in RAID 0
2x nVidia 8800GTX in SLi

That should do it.

What's your budget?

I would wait and go for the next gen after the 8800. If Nvidia follows the ATi R600 their G81 card will also correctly address dual/quad cores directly. The next gen of motherboards will have a different memory interface. The newer AMD dual slug L motherboards are just now hitting the market and incorporate the new direct (dedicated) memory interface which the R600 will take full advanatge of when it is released in March. I hear Intel is also planning on a similar approach... so you are nutz

Trust me I know about the wait. As for memory, DDR3 = flop. It took DDR2 5 and a half years to catch on, I doubt that DDR3 is going to be a standird anytime soon.

And for GPU solutions, I would never run a DX10 SLi rig unless it was worth it.

Fine. Whoever buys that and dosn't have a ton of money is a moron.
I mean, a $2000 dollar computer would probably be three quarters as fast. I bought a extremely expensive X850XTPE (when it came out). And it was stupid, the 7800GTX came out not long after I got mine. Boom. My card was $210.

Personally I'd try and get a RD600 and dual X2800XT's, mainly because I don't like 12 inch cards or green  ;) But hey, I'm obsessed with ATI...

Fanboy And BTW, the R600s will be just as big. When you try to pack 1GB of RAM, and a physics processer onto one board it gets big.

R600XTX is Nine and a half inches long, or about the size of latter DX9 cards or the 8800GTS.

1500 is a good number to work with but for really high performance you may need to boost that a bit (but not 3000-4000 which is just silly). Currently FSX is not a multithread game and although it does use the resources a dual core provides better than FS9 because it was written for Windows Vista, it does not need the expense of a quad core processor as listed above to make it work.

If you really want the best to make FSX run with stunning visuals and also be ready for the DX10 patch for FSX I would take the same advice I am following from someone who was a member here and was somewhat involved with FSX testing. I will be waiting until about May to start looking at hardware. The reason for that is because between now and then motherboard, memory and video card manufactures will be pushing their old technology at top dollar. If I am going to be spending a chunk of cash (and I do intend to do that this coming summer) I want to make sure what I am purchasing will not be outdated 2 months after I buy it.

The ATi R600 will in fact run circles around the 8800 and because it uses GDDR4 memory and a controller that allows the GPU to run in tandum with up to 4 other GPU's along with having the ability to take full advantage of the new motherbioard design direct access memory contollers with dual and quad core processors, it makes absolutely no sense to purchase hardware right now, especially at the price they want for some of it.

Nvidia will follow with the release of the G81. As of now less is known about the G81 than the R600 but either way, spending big bucks (even 1500) right now is money being put into last years technology.

I will be waiting until May to see what is on the market and which direction to go (ATi or Nvidia). I can either spend 1500-2500 now for last years junk or about the same in May-July for something that will take me into the next 2 years easily and run FSX better than any current hardware offered.
