AMD or Pentium

Postby Craig. » Mon Feb 05, 2007 9:23 am

Hi Guys,
I am looking at buying a new pc.
Sadly i am going to have to go with dell as they have a payment plan that I can afford.
So which is the better choice? AMD dual core or the pentium one?
Cheers for any help.

I'll save the hardware answers for the hardware Gurus.. and just interject that buying a Dell has enough limitations built in (upradability/overclockability/old-chipset/low-quality RAM) and that going into debt for that will be a mistake down the road. Take the payments you're plannning on making, stick them aside along with all the little expenses and upgrades you'd normally make... and before you know it, you'll have enough cash to build a much better, much more current, much more upgradable computer. Otherwise, by the time you pay off that Dell...all you'll have is an old Dell and no cash stashed away..

The Intel Core 2 Duo is the way to go. The E6600 is prefered, but for the budget user, E6300 is the way to go.

BULLS***!!! The E6700 outpreforms the FX60 by 10% and is less than half the cost. The E6300 is on par if not faster than the 4400+ and is again half the price.

Intel is winning all around.

Craig, I always had a Pentium wether 2,3, and now 4 ,But I admit this is not and easy answer
AMD has always build a good prossesors they keep their model for longer time ,Instead Intel every month they release a new model ,putting your new CPU obsolete all the time.
AMD is well know as a better graphic performance, and Intel its more like to compile files its very good.

For me both are good equaly ,Its not a matter, I have a Pentium so its the best, NO! Its a matter of Prices ,motherboard models ,Let just say ,Its the moment where you buy it,etc..

Hi Alrot,
Thanks for your help. Sadly the world of PC's has to be the most frustrating way to throw money down the toilet. Lets face it, no matter what you go with, its generally obsolete within a few weeks anyway. :'(

Tom's Hardware has a good comparison chart for processors.

To Craig. You REALLY should build it yourself, it IS WAY cheaper than Dell. With my old Dell I supposidly got:
700$ off
Free upgrade to 1gb RAM from 512
19" screen from price of 17"
Free all in one printer

Anyway, I looked at the same components over the net and added them up, AND I could STILL make it cheaper than that Dell where I supposidly got 700$ off. You most likely aren't getting a special, so then your probably getting majorly ripped off.

So, buy a new computer with:
Core 2 duo E6300
1-2gb RAM
X1950GT
Vista home premium 64bit OEM

Well, that's atleast what I'd do.

Now for the actual question:
Get none, Pentiums are out of date, and Core 2 duo is faster and cheaper than AMD. The Core 2 duo is over twice as fast as Pentiums, and up to 40 % faster than a AMD.

Intel is faster

I thought the E6700 outperforms the FX-62 by 20-50%?
