IDE to USB?

Postby Gunny04 » Wed Feb 07, 2007 4:21 pm

do these things really work? you hook hard drives up to em and plug em into the wall and hook em to your PC via USB cable.... I'd imagine it would be kinda slow but do they work? because I have a hard drive IDE in my computer which is SATA and I'd LOVE to get it out of the case and limit the heat that it creates.... and I have another identicle 160gb laying on the floor unable to use because of power cables and space issues...

Sounds like you need to buy a new case Gunny rather than spend money on external hard drive whatsit thingys

No new case for me.... Don't think this ACER is worth moving, aparently they only hook one hard drive up at a time... no biggie I have only one that I cant use so I may buy one and try it. If it doesn't work its only 20 bucks.... not much you can get for 20 these days.

Yep thats something like what I am looking at. At least I could run another hard drive without getting a new PSU!

I think Ive heard of fans designed to attach to HDDs. These days everything has a fan. including my joystick to keep the pilot cool in extreme emergencies  8-) . Jk about that last one. but yeah, id take a look at specialty pc hardware stores and websites.

Basically you want to turn them into external HDDs? In that case, grab a caddy and away you go. I've got two for backup - very many people use them.

Easy, no?

If your HDD is a SATA drive and you have an empty SATA port you might want to consider an E-SATA enclosure. It is like having your HDD inside your computer.

They cost a bit more than a USB drive but, depending on what you are going to use the drive for, it might be worth it.

I found this one on Newegg

I use the Vantec case which is E-Sata and USB but I have a number of computers I share files on.
