Suddenly, some of my USB-dependant hardware refuses to be recognized by my computer. The items in question are an external hard drive & iPOD, both of which appear to use USB 2.0. When checking their status in Device Manager, all available six ports/hubs are displayed, but if the offending items are connected to any of them, they are shown as "unknown" and that no drivers are installed. No changes have been made to the iPOD software as installed, and the external drive does not even come with any drivers, as it reportedly runs (and did until recently) with what's already in place in Windows XP SP-2. All of my other USB equipment works fine (stick & pedals, printer, digital camera, and mouse). I've done system restore (incl. in safe mode), checked for new drivers for both equipment, and tried reinstalling SP2 to see if it made a difference (it did not). Thankfully, both items work fine on a relative's computer, but this only highlights the probability that something has gone wonky with my own computer. Wondering if anyone has had a similar problem and if they were able to overcome it. The computer will be checked out but will wait until next week, when I go back to work, and when I won't miss it as much!
