The best vid card for myself

Postby flyboy 28 » Mon Jan 29, 2007 7:12 pm

So I'm looking at purchasing a video card. I've been dealing with my onboard (gasp) for about a year and a half now and I'm fed up. I'm not looking to spend more than $100-125. I'm running a P4 with 512 RAM and XP.

Advice is appreciated. :)

Both of you. The number one rule when posting in hardware is knowing your specs. In this case, I need your graphics interface.

Which is why he needs to know the interface.  Suggesting a PCI-e card will be usless if you only have an AGP slot. ;)

The ATI X1950pro AGP and PCI both support vista aero and both are very powerful cards (latest in the range )and very good price.Afraid your going to get sod all for that amount of cash :(

PCI-E, PCI, and AGP are all the most common interfaces in home computers.

PCI-EXPRESS <---- What all modern, fast cards are
PCI<---- This is severely outdated, and ALL PCI cards are terrible
AGP<---- This is slightly outdated, however, you can still buy some nice cards for AGP, such as the 7800GS+, X1950pro and X850XT.

So, you have an AGP slot and some PCI slots? Well then to look for AGP cards! A few good ones are:
7800GS+
X1950pro (MAKE SURE YOU GET THE AGP VERSION!)

Or if you have a budget, get the X850XT (MAKE SURE YOU GET THE AGP VERSION!)

Renember, PCI and PCI-Express are TOTALLY diferant things...

Eh? :-?

Sorry, you're going to need to elaborate. I'm super illiterate with hardware. :-[

I'm no grfx card expert. I have a GeForce 6800 Ultra in my desktop, and the ATI 200M in my laptop, and according to this chart both are comptible with vista.

Nothing like answering a question with a quote. ;)

The graphics interface is how the video card communicates with the rest of the computer.  This is physically seen in different types of slots, or places to put your graphics card.  All the slots look relatively the same, but they vary mainly in length, and position on the motherboard.  Your graphics slot will almost always be the expansion slot closest to the CPU.  This link should help you a bit...
