Socket 775 is actually called LGA775. (The current Intel socket)

Socket 1207 is usually called Socket F. This is an AMD socket only usually used for servers. The extra pins are for more scalability and better power distribution. Basically, this isn't an option for home users.

Conroe. It's the only sensible choice if you're building a computer at the moment. It outperforms its AMD counterpart in every way possible.

Core2duo on socket LGA775 would be MY choice if I was going to blow a lot of bucks on a PC right now, but I wouldn't do that when my old socket 939 rig is still doing everything I need to do in style ;)
