What socket config is better?(performance)

939 and AM2 are the same in performance. The only advantage with AM2 is that you won't have to ditch your RAM in a future upgrade. However, Core 2 Duo is the fastest right now.

LGA 775 are the best sockets available right now if you put a Core 2 Duo in them.  However, AM2 all the way if you are sticking to an AMD system, 939 is outdated.  I know alot of people are too scared to take the plunge with intel....trust me, just wait a few months and you will see all the technology coming out, then you can decide for yourself

Socket 775 is actually called LGA775. (The current Intel socket)

Socket 1207 is usually called Socket F. This is an AMD socket only usually used for servers. The extra pins are for more scalability and better power distribution. Basically, this isn't an option for home users.

I guess the Sempron 3100+ on socket 754 PC I just built for gaming and server apps is just no good then.

Ah well, it only cost me $163 and does what I want it to do, it's a shame it's so terrible then

Precisely. The only way C2D is really beneficial is IF you are building a new system. If your old one does what you need, then there's no need to upgrade

As for Socket F, it's planned for the server line of Opterons, including support for DDR3. I think what you're thinking of is the modified version of Socket F, called 1027FX, which allows for dual-socket, dual-core (four effective cores) processors in desktop PCs for home enthusiasts.
