My GeForce 4 MX440

Postby Katahu » Wed Nov 15, 2006 1:06 am

One of my computers has this card and I'm wondering. Can updates like NVIDIA's drivers help it support DX9 since it doesn't support DX9 under the stock drivers that came with my old computer?

No sir... it requires hardware for the drivers to work.

however... digging through my mind I seem to remember some type of display.cfg change that makes the old cards work better. I will take a look around and see if I find anyhing about it and post back however DX9 is not going to work unless the hardware is DX9 compliant.

EDIT:
Assuming you are looking for DX9 ability in FS9,...

I dont know if this will work.. however back up your current display.cfg file, then open the original in notepad, scroll down and replace the GeForce 3/4 section in the list with this:

I had to use the code feature posting that so smilies did not appear

Save it..

That may enable DX9 reflections for you. I remember it worked for FS2002 but I do not remember if it worked for FS9. You will need to set it up in the sim to see.

As for the drivers... I would use the last set made for the card if you can find them. I do not know if newer Nvidia drivers are designed for the older cards.. check the site and/or readme. I would not use newer drivers unless the card is listed as being supported.

;NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440
[000010DE:00000171]
DriverValidate2=1

That is the only section you need to add I believe.

or this......

;NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X
[000010DE:00000181]
DriverValidate2=1

However, adding reflections will cause the MX440 to lose even more performance.

http://www.simviation.com/fs2002misc11.htm

That is a link to the fix here on SimV.

The readme will explain how to do this properly. It works, I had an MX460 and had to use this fix as well.

I figured I would post the entire section to be sure it was covered

So what cards can you replace it with? I have an MS-6577 motherboard and I've been trying to figure out for ages what card would be better but still work with the ms-6577 and it's AGP 4x slot  ???

Replacing it with a GeForce 4 ti card would be the least you could do. The MX was always inferior.

I think many new AGP cards can run in 4x mode as well as 8x.

Pretty much anything is better than the MX series, You may even be able to use up to a 7800GS or above.

I've been looking for something a little more cost effective on what is now a life-limited mobo ::)

There are plenty of 256mb FX5500's on ebay, are these going to be ok for a 4x AGP mobo, and wll they require more than a 250w PSU?

I think the radeon 9250's and 9500's are a better card than those GF FX 5200-5500's. Though I've never seen a 256mb 5500 in action  :P

You'd be making a big mistake going back to anything of that vintage when you can get a 7300GT or 7600GS-GT etc. for very little cost. Don't get anything less than a 7000 series card and pick a decent one out of those, not an LE or some rubbish.

If you seek, you shall find a bargain.

Radeon 9250

Price is ok, what is the manufacturer like? And how is the 9500 better?

You get what you pay for, sometimes you get less
