Can vouch for it as well.  It is the way to do it.  Upgrading with the older OS already installed can create all kinds of nastiness.

Well, it is interesting because his instructions say to install Win'98 and then reboot and install the XP upgrade disk, which is NOT what you two guys above did at all, Luke's info is flawed, read it carefully.

I read luke's info as: "If the 98 setup disc won't work DURING the XP installation, remove one of the RAM sticks."

NOT "to install 98 and then install the XP Upgrade over it".

Remove the card furthest from the processor. Push the clasps at either end of the memory stick to release it. Place the memory card somewhere safe and install Windows 98.

Hmmm, I don't how that can interpreted to read anything but to install Win98.
Actually, I believe the article is offering two options. The first is to install XP upgrade without having to install 98 and without removing RAM. The second is by removing RAM, installing 98, and then re-installing RAM and running XP upgrade.

Well, regardless of the confusion, you don't need to remove one ram stick or anything else, especially don't install Win'98.

When you put the upgrade disk in and it begins setup, it asks for a copy of windows to be inserted to verify you qualify for the discounted XP Upgrade install.

As soon as the Win'98 (or other windows disk) is verified, XP install will proceed, you don't want to install Win'98, it will end up a cumbersome installation.

An "upgrade" install such as this is really not an upgrade at all, it is a full blown WinXP installation..... with a catch.....

There is a problem with the upgrade install however if you are trying to use Third Party utilities such as nLite to customize Windows install disks with Cluster fixes and Raid drivers etc. Luke, I wouldn't count on such an installation working with nLite, though it may......

I've just been helping someone for weeks try to get a RAID-0 array optimised with an XP install, he just failed repeatedly, then he told me he was using an upgrade XP disk, and that is the problem, as it needs the other Windows disk to be inserted. I'm not sure what this does, but it certainly messed up our party and caused a lot of lost time and effort.

What it says:

"The enclosed program will search your hard disk and/or CD to confirm your eilgibility for this upgrade. The software will install only if you are a licensed user of one of the following products:
Microsoft Windows 98
Windows 98 Second Edition
Windows Millennium Edition"

That translates to popping a Win98 (or other Windows disk like ME ) into the drive during setup. It just detects

Never upgrade.. to do so brings on all sorts of issues which performance computer users will see but typical office system will not.

I just let the XP Upgrade see the old disk when it asks and go from there, have never had a problem with an install
