AMD future?

Postby Sytse » Sat Nov 11, 2006 8:42 am

So... I see a lot of topics lately of members asking if they should dump their AMD setup and buy the new intel core 2 stuff, because, right now, it's a lot better than anything AMD has to offer (according to a lot of people).

I was just wondering about what AMD is going to do. They aren't going to sit and watch Intel take over the whole market, are they? So is it good to say that people should dump their AMD and go for Intel, or should they wait for something that's even better from AMD? That is, if AMD is planning on producing something like that...  ???

Not really a hardware topic, but more an economic topic, but I'd like to know what's going on between those companies.  :)

Fortunately for AMD, they don't totally rely on the gaming enthusiast for their sales, in fact a large proportion of their business has nothing to do with high end enthusiast's CPU's which is where the Conroe hurts them the most. The FX line of CPU's would be hit the hardest through lack of sales due to Conroe.

AMD just went into debt buying up ATI as well so they better have a good plan  ;)

I just read in a magazine the other day about a new AMD CPU that is supposedly going to make the Conroe run for cover. Just can't recall what publication.

If i can locate it I will post a link.

that why I am in a bit of a waiting mode.. in about 90 days allot of things are going to start surfacing.

Purchasing right now is all about impulse, not logic.

AMD is going to be releasing Quad Cores along with Intel soon, so we will see how the market will change...

also, I purchased now because I knew that my Core 2 Duo was all I needed and that it would last me a long time.  The price to performance ratio was great, and at one point you need to upgrade, I'm not just going to wait and wait for something better.

Don't AMD also already have a large and fairly stable market in servers?

Yes and no. Yes the 768 Opteron is probibly the best server processer ever, however many OEMs such as HP or Dell use Intel Xeons due to contracts.

MMMMMM, I heard the fx-70 to fx-76 are coming out soon for 4x4.

To be honest the fx-76 looks bad. It's 3.2ghz (I think) and a 3.2ghz AMD isn't really going to hurt a 2.93ghz Conroe. The TDP is AFAIK 125watt, that's as bad as a Pentium EE.

I can't wait till 65nm AMD's are out though, putting out less heat, fast, and cheap. :D I may replace my older rig with one.

Just for kicks the TDP for a 8800GTX is 185watts!!!

The difference between Intel and AMDs new processors are Intel will have a Quad Core made of 2 dual core processors in a single package whereas AMD's will be 4 processing cores on a single chip due out in 2007.

So that means Intel will be first and also allows them use the same chip for dual core or quad core, but also might face the issues of heating problems, communication bottlenecks and complex product road maps.

Although Intel is making a quad core that will consume less power (also out sometime in 2007) to me it appears they are just wanting to be the first with the new stuff whereas AMD is sitting back and looking at the big picture before releasing theirs.

hmm well atm intel do have the upperhand but from what i have heard the kentsfield cpu (quad) will be 2 conroes strapped together, i think AMD will pull so,ething big and especialy when ATi release their DX10 compatable cards because that is going to make the G80 run for the hills

AMD won't have bought ATI on a whim. The next generation AMD processers and the ATI Graphics cards are no doubt going to be pretty special when put in the same box.
