Optical drives, Am I missing something?

Postby congo » Fri Nov 03, 2006 11:31 pm

It seems as if any optical drives I install are extremely slow to respond.

I click on a drive to explore it's contents for example and it takes a ridiculous amount of time to respond in windows. 30-60 seconds ?

Am I doing something wrong or does this happen to everyone ?

Mine is pretty slow, I'm pretty sure it's the way I have it hooked up though. When installing software the Windows Setup Wizard takes a while too.

I think my read times are 33,000ms  :P

Seriously, you don't get a lag time from when you insert a disk or explore the disk?

It's as if it's reading the disk and caching it or something, maybe I'm just too impatient, but the drive also seems to take varying amounts of time to kick in, anything from 8 seconds or so to 30 or 40 seconds it seems.

I didn't "do" anything to it that I know of.

To explain, it's almost like a floppy when accessing, at least initially. Once the drive is fired up and reading the disk it's fine, burns fast etc.

I have seen that Congo on different systems, IDE drivers and with diffrent ATAPI interface CD burn software installed.

I have never really looked into it however I do know that certain combinations tend to create boot delays in CD's depending on the CD itself

I think I had a similar issue a few years back and after installing Nero it stopped. Possibly because of the Nero ATAPI driver.

Hmm,

One of the first things I do after installing XP is disable the Windows burning service and then I install Nero.

Maybe I didn't install Nero properly. I might try a Nero  re-install and see what happens. Thanks Nick.

Go into services and stop and disable the "IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service" from both the general and Logon tabs.

I have never disabled the burning service even with nero installed

Well, I have never enabled it, so there ...........

I wonder if that could be buggering things up?

I hated the XP burn service, always accidently preparing burns and scheduling them and what not, you get that when you are a clicker :P

Possibly a long shot but I noticed with my drives they are extremely picky about the brand of media used.

Luckily most game cds/dvds never have a issue, took me less than 15 minutes to install and start flying FSX. But again some don't even read at all

They hate Sony discs, can take upto 3-5 minutes to read but Staples brand work fine. Memorex, Verbatim work well also reads in a matter of seconds and it is the same be them DVD or CD. write times are similar to read times.

Current drives I am using are BenQ's and probably the last I buy just due to the fact that they are so picky about which brand media is used. Nothing worst then burning a few gigs of data to a DVD and at the 99% mark it gives a coaster >:(

I had used the Windows burner and also Nero, doesn't seem to matter which utility same outcomes.

You are not useing the Nvidia IDE drivers are you. Have heard a lot of people complain about them. Seems the MS drivers work better.

And I agree on the media brand possability.  I finally settled on Verbatim as my favorite choice.

I have 1 IDE optical and 1 SATA optical drive and other than cable management have not seen any difference there either
