Front Panel Audio Connections

Postby cheesegrater » Fri Nov 03, 2006 9:23 pm

I want to connect my front panel audio plugs to my Audigy 2 ZS card. I have individual plugs for MIC, MIC_BIAS, FPOUT_L etc. I know where to connect them to on the card, however the plugs keep falling out! I don't want to be taping them to the card.

Here is a picture of where the plugs go.

Here is a picture of a Dell system, they got a special plug for the sound card. Is there anywhere I can get one of those?

when you say they keep falling out.. do you mean the pins are falling out of the circuit board plug and/or the plug keeps coming loose from the card?

I mean the plugs keep falling out of the pins. They are plugs for individual pins.

I think I understand.. you have the individual front audio ports plugged into the card but they are single connections and tend to be loose and slide off. What you are after is a combination connection that has a single plug as shown in the image above.

I do not know where to get an entire cable short of seeing if Dell or Creative would sell you one however you can ID the plug which should be part of a standard and make up a cable with termination points needed.

Also, does the motherboard itself have a front panel audio port? Typically that point is easier to work with than trying to tie into the audio card itself and it should provide the same outputs. Many motherboard FP audio ports are set up to accept any typical modular USB or firewire plug if you have an old one laying around.

My motherboard has a front panel audio port. I had it connected there when I used the onboard sound, and it worked. Will it work with a Sound Card? I thought those ports only work with onboard audio.

I think it depends on the motherboard. Assuming onboard sound is off in the BIOS, hook it up to the port and see if you get sound.

Doesn't work. Too bad. On newer creative cards they included standardized plugs for front panel audio so people don't have to make crazy mods to make it work.

Oh well... it was worth a shot.

If it is any consolation I reviewed that blog for accuracy and as far as I can tell it appears to be in order. You can use that information as a last resort to make a pigtail.

On the other hand, if the problem you are having is keeping the front panel connectors from coming off that card plug shown in the images above, you could use a needle and give them a bit of a crimp inside the female connector so they grip a bit tighter.
