SP2 ate my Hamster.

Postby Woodlouse2002 » Mon Oct 16, 2006 9:30 am

Yesterday I installed SP2 onto my computer. I did a sweep with adaware  but the first attempt froze halfway so I rebooted, uninstalled it then disabled all major programmes running in the background and installed it again, this time it seemed to work. After that everything seemed fine, no apparent problems.

This morning I get up and I can't connect to the internet. So I check the cable on the wireless router and check the internet on the other two computers and everything there is fine. So I reinstall the drivers for my wireless dongle, still nothing.

The computer can still see the wireless network it just seems incapable of connecting to it properly. When you reboot it starts up connected but it will not connect to the internet, when you disconnect and reconnect it says something about the connection not being complete.

Now the only thing that has changed is I've installed SP2 and I don't quite get it as the wireless and the internet worked fine all day yesterday after the installation. But today it's decided against it.

The Messenger Live trouble shooter says somethings up with the default gateway.

Any ideas? ???

I installed SP2 last Monday...I wasn't a big fan of it either, but it boosted my system's performance and I think it made FS9 run better too...So I'm not complaining.. ;)

Good for you. However I installed SP2 and have lost my internet. Even a system restore to before SP2 hasn't recovered it. I'm less than impressed.

Adaware Froze halfway through, you uninstalled it. Also you say you disabled all background processes, but you didn't say how or what.

Blaming SP2 is a kneejerk reaction that's probably not related to your problem at all, it's more likely you have deleted something to do with your Internet connection, and it could be your DNS or "nameserver" settings.

Go to your network settings and reconfigure your connection to your router, making sure the IP is correct for your wireless card (unless it's set to auto) and that your DNS settings are in place.

Use your Ip's and ISP's DNS settings of course, not mine.

Image

Hijackthis! will easily wipe out your nameserver (DNS) settings if you used that program to disable processes, it took me a couple of times to figure out why I was wiping out my internet connection with that software.

3am now. Finally recovered internet after system restore and two more attempts at installing SP2.

I only closed programmes running in the taskbar during the installation (no 3rd party software used) and in the very first attempt adaware didn't freeze but the SP2 installation did.

Ok. Same has happened again, last night after the SP2 installation everything worked. Now the following day it doesn't. Seems something is removing this computers default gateway, IP and DNS.

I'm now considering a Windows reinstall. Wise or no?

Ok, just recovered internet again by means of system restore to just after SP2 installation. Is there anyway to find out your computers DNS and default gateway manually? Because thats what it seems to be losing when I turn it off.

Goto:

Start/settings/control panel/network connections/right click your connection/properties/select internet protocol (TCP/IP) and click the properties button.

You should see a screen similar to my pic above, that lower section is the dns settings.

Perhaps for some reason your dns settings are not sticking or they are being modified. Try to resolve it before formatting.

Also, before formatting, check this out:

http://www.nliteos.com/

It's a windows deployment tool useful for combining WinXP, SP2 and all updates etc, into a single windows install disk.

Not sticking would be what they're doing. I've went to that screen when it wasn't working and half the boxes were blank. At the moment it's even more perplexing because I've got connected to the internet yet my network connections folder is empty. And yes I do know to click "View network connections".

There is also a TCIP Winsocks tool posted on the net that clears everything and allows you to rebuild it.

I doubt SP2 caused the problem.. more than likely the system locked during the SP2 update for another reason, typically a hardware failure such as memory could not handle the huge update or the system was doing something in the background that caused a memory crash.

Ok. I'm downloading the Winsocks programme. At least I know if it doesn't work then I can restore back to this point and it'll work again, at least temorarily.

Thanks Nick. That seems to have cured it.
