Sata hard drive

Postby Gunny04 » Sun Sep 17, 2006 6:44 am

Ok I know a fair share about computers, but what is the difference between sata and IDE Hard drives? Because I think my computer has sata (The funny little hard drive power pluggin thing, and it goes to motherboard via small plugin not the IDE cables) and also, Where can I buy an adapter to put on a PSU without SATA pluggin so I can hook the hard drive up to another PSU when I put it in... also, I think my motherboard also has IDE hookups, does that mean it can also hook up IDE hard drives? Cheers, Gunny, and sorry for any messed up grammer run on sentences or any other mess ups!

I don't know all the technical details, but SATA cables transfer data faster than IDE cables. The only difference is the cables, the hard drive is the same. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, if you have both IDE and SATA plugs, you can use SATA and IDE hard drives and disk drives at the same time.

Are you serious? You cannot use a SATA cable witha IDE drive, or vice versa. It just dosn't work, the pins are different. Also SATA does have the 4 pin molex along with the SATA power adapter, so your good ithor way.

Different pins, faster transfer rates, smaller cable, those are the differences.

Well every SATA motherboard has atleast two IDE slots along with atleast two (with a max of 4) SATA slots. So your good to use anything you want on the bord.

The Intel 965 chipset uses the ICH8/R southbridge and this contains provision for NO PATA IDE channels.
The single IDE controller you see is basically an integrated plug-in IDE controller and is there purely for backwards compatability.
I don't think I've as yet seen any 965 based board where the manufacturer has decided to add a second IDE controller.

Just so you know ;)

Complicated! well for somebody who hasnt bought a pc in 2+ years, and also Has been out of technology for two months.... lol I just went to the local PC store, and 8 bucks for the power adapter..... and the last thing I bought from there was junk (IDE Cable) It almost sent my computer packing.... lol so I think I will wait until I go to circuit city or somewhere, but thanks on info, so I might be able to use the old HDDs? Cool Cheers, Gunny
