Where are my drivers???

Postby Triple_7 » Fri Aug 25, 2006 2:05 pm

I have at last recieved my new graphics card.  But theres a problem.  As warned the CD is useless for the drivers.  And the ones I managed to download are deffinatly not letting this thing run to anywhere near its full potential.  So where can I find the RIGHT ones and the latest ???

BFG Tech GeForce FX 5500 OC 256MB DDR PCI

I can tell something isnt right since the highest resolution I have to choose is 1024x768 in 32 colors.  The max listed for it is 2048x1536 :-[  And FS runs no better then my old 128MB 5200 could do >:(

Heya,

Firstly, try Driver Cleaner Pro to completely clean your system of your old drivers.

Then, have a look over at Omege Drivers.net
and find the ones for your card.

Actually, Fly2E gave better advice than me!

nVidia Card:

  1. Unplug nic card or modem from net or disconnect
  2. Remove nvidia from add/remove programs
  3. Reboot into safe mode (F8 during boot up)
  4. On reboot into safe mode WinXP SP1/SP2 will auto detect and install drivers. Just let it do its thing. If you can cancel out of the auto install hardware wizard then skip the rest and run Driver Cleaner! If you can NOT cancel out of auto detect wizard then...
  5. Navigate to device manager->display adapters->highlight nVidia and click uninstall or remove but don't reboot
  6. Disable any AntiVirus Software (If you don't disable is than it could give trouble)
  7. Run Cab Cleaner (not needed, but recommended)
  8. Run Driver Cleaner
  9. Empty recycle bin and reboot
  10. Install the new drivers.

This will allow you to remove your old drivers and then install your new drivers.

Complicated, but follow them and you new drivers should work like a charm  ;)

Good Luck,

Ok...Got the old ones cleaned off and have the new Omega drivers installed.  Noticed a little bit of an improvement.  But not much.   But now I think I have found the problem...also could have been why my 128 didnt perform like it should.

My PCI slots are all standard.  This card requires a PCI 2.0 slot.  I have done some searching but can not come up with anything...so now my question is...

Is there a driver download that will upgrade mine to PCI 2.0 ???  Or have I just been screwed over again by this glorified piece of $#*^ I call a computer :-X

My motherboard manual doesn't even say what kind of PCI slots they are. You should go to your motherboard manufacturer's website or forum to find out.

Get your drivers straight from nVidia. No need to download from hole in the wall places.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_84.21.html

This isn't the LATEST driver. However the 9x.xx series are extremely bulky, and unless you have a Geforce 7950, using 84.21 instead won't make a difference.

Already have the drivers installed and they work, so not going to change them.  I couldnt even get the ones from nvidias site to work right.

As for the PCI...I found in the little waste of paper booklet that mine are 2.2...personaly that means nothing to me since I never knew there were different PCI untill now.  So whats the difference here.  I cant afford a new mobo and just want to finally get this thing upgraded to what it should be.  And I cant even find my mobo on websites...it doesnt exist apparently.  PC Chips piece of $%^@ >:(

If all else fails at least this 256 runs about the same as my 128 did and maybe just a little better.  So not loosing much, but still going to be forever pissed that I cant get anything to f#$%in work with this pathetic excuse for a system :-/
