Mainboard temperature.

Graphics Cards, Sound Cards, Joysticks, Computers, etc. Ask or advise here!

My Northbridge heatsink is passive and unmodified.
Everest reports CPU temps of 29c-33c with case side open and desk fan blowing in to it, 40c-44c with side panel on.(local weather is currently 28c). Mainboard stays around 58c-62c regardless of case being open or closed.
Could it be my graphics card overheating? The reason I ask this is because CharlottesMum was watching a video on it today and it turned itself off, just after losing the mouse pointer from the display. Would that be sufficient enough heat to "fool" Everst/sandra re the mainboard temps?
Thanks again for all your help lads!

Doubt it. The northbridge shouldn't be affected that much by how much the graphics card is used.

My northbridge sits around 36C idle and under full load never goes above 40C.

However it could be that little bit extra caused the system to shut down to save your chipset from frying itself.

The only thing that comes to mind is reseating the heatsink on the chipset. If it's been nudged and is not making proper contact the heatsink will not be doing its job properly.

Zalman makes very good passive and active heatsinks.
I have installed a passive one (ZM-NB47J) on my Asus A8N-E, in place of the noisy and scarcely effective original heat sink+fan. No noise, and temperature below or about 40C, even with the crazy temperatures we're experiencing these days.
You might want to look into installing one yourself; check if your mobo is supported and which model suits you best.

The ZM-NB47J is good stuff. I have the ZM-NB45J and it cools my nBridge extreemly well, even with the rediculous overclock.

I would like to know why that northbridge is that hot with no load.. that does not make any sense to me at all unless it is an inherant issue with the motherboard.

I have never seen a northbridge get that hot unless the system was under a load and overclocked to the hilt.

I am wondering if there is a defect in that northbridge

He is talking about the mobo temperature not northbridge.

Is it possible that the sensor is manfunctioning?

My CPU has been running at around 55 celsius for the past 4 years and I've have no problems with it.

.....so what is a chipset heatsink then:

To the touch my Chipset passive heatsink is very hot, the  heatsink on my CPU is relatively cool.
BTW it's an MSI 7037 mobo.

Exactly, his heatsink is hot to touch.

I installed the other zalman northbridge cooler, the

Well I think the problem's quite clear now, so i'm going to try these in this order:
1. New Northbridge HS & Fan

And if that doesn't work,

2. New Case (any excuse... ;) )

And if THAT doesn't work,

3. New Mainboard..

Which would mean..

4. New CPU  :D

CharlottesMum is gonna love me  ::)

May I suggest a ThermalTake Tsunami, or a Lian Li PC-60 (coolest case temp wise in that price range)

Well you know Conroe is out now ;) Why not go pick one up ;)

Good advice Cameron, however a friend of a friend has an account with Silverstone, so I may be tempted by one of those, I hear they're very good and for the price I'll get it for, well....  ;)

Silverstone are exceptionally good cases. If youve got the funds, I would suggest a TJ-07.

UPDATE!
BIOS (why didnt think of that before?) says my CPU is currently hovering around the 60c mark which would make sense for a P4 Prescott..
So it seems those who thought that my CPU and Northbridge temperatures were inverted were right.

My sensors are t*ts up.

At least I know now, and I dont need a new motherboard thank God (funds are limited at the mo).
Later today I'll be reseating my CPU heatsink with some new thermal paste and if that works I'll leave it alone for the moment.
As has been said so much recently, I'm gonna wait before I spend on serious upgrading!
Thanks for all of your help lads, Ive learnt a lot from this episode, I'll keep you updated!
Rob.
