Well AMD is fameous for having low heat output. So they can get away with useing smaller coolers. However I would suggest a Zalman insted of the Thermaltake that you have on there now.

I would only buy an aftermarket cooler if I was overclocking. They wouldn't issue a 3 year warranty if the CPU overheated on the stock cooler.

You should get lower temperatures on your current setup.

I have to disagree with your assesment Cam... the CNPS-9500 is an excellent unit in its day but it is old news and has been redesigned by Zalman and re-released in a 939/AM2 version:

The CNPS-9500 AM2 will fit 939 and AM2 processors so upgrading does not mean you have to chuck an expensive HSF out the door. I have personally used both the CNPS-9500 and the CNPS-9500 AM2. I can vouch for the CNPS-9500 AM2 being better designed, better thermal with a larger block, ... and even quieter than the CNPS-9500. On top of that it has a nice 'low glow' green LED instead of the silly high brite.

Also, I'm a modder, I like bright LEDs, so why would I want a duller one.

Yes, AS5 should help alot. Make sure to fully remove all of the old thermalpaste from both the chip and heatsink before applying the new stuff. I use a citrus cleaner, which seems to work fine.

hmmmm...

a. because we don't buy a HSF for it's fancy light?
b. because the new design allows for processor upgrade without replacement of the HS?
c. because (even if it is close) the new design does cool better and has a better block?

The green glow has the look of glowing radioactive material ... it just isn't annoying like the old version.

I dunno about you, but it seems a waste of allot of money to purchase a the older model for something as silly as an LED

Use pure alcohol to clean the components, especially the processor. Anything that has a fragrance or has byproducts in it can leave a microscopic film. The heatsink can be cleaned using a fine metal polish if it has swirl scratches or a mark left over by a thermal pad and then cleaned with alcohol
