Artifacts - Probably Solved

Postby Mees » Tue Aug 08, 2006 7:23 am

Well, those flashes were artifacts, and i don't know how to get rid of them.
The card is at it's stock clock speeds, latest drivers, i have 550W PSU, 1GB of RAM, so i'm out of ideas, you guys have some?

Cheers

EDIT: The K8N has the Robust Graphics Booster function, i had it on turbo, now tis on Auto, that's probably the cure ;)

Flashing artifacts is a classic symptom of overheating. Does the 7900 have temperature sensors? Check the temperature. Is the cooling fan on the card functioning properly? Do you have good airflow?

I would make sure the card is at fault by trying a different card in your mobo, or trying the card in a different computer. Then I would return the card.

Do that and report back

I remember looking at your card specs and found no factory overclock however it is possible that company still screwed with the internals and bumped up voltages.

Once of the reasons I suggest BFG products when I recommend a 7900 is because of the 7900 manufacture issue. BFG's are known for having the least, if almost no problems. It sounds like the card is malfunctioning.

If the 6800GT works fine you should get the 7900 replaced.

That is a good point. Nvidia only supplies the GPU. Everything else that is mounted on the card: heatsink, RAM, capacitors, etc. is supplied by the manufacturer and it could come from anywhere. If they use cheap parts the card will be prone to failure.

that makes sense... it was automatically overclocking a card which is already running @ its max ability

Glad you got it sorted out.... it could have damaged the card had you not found it.

Years back I had an MSI board with an AGP boost feature hidden and enabled in the BIOS causing strange problems until I found out what was going on and how to display the hidden bIOS settings.

Return Merchandise Authorization

That is a standard term used to say: Send it back and get a replacement under warranty.

A large portion of the 7900 series produced had problems. As someone suggested, send it back and hope they send you a good one.

Check this link and you will see you are not alone with the problem.
