I maybe getting a Nvidea 6800GT 256MB PCI-E. Good idea?

One more question...

When I get it, can I leave my other one in (not sure how much good it will do but it can't hurt, can it??) I do have an extra slot for another card that I can put the 6800 in. Once I've gotten it in, what do I do. Do I just boot up and go or do I need to format it or do something in the system section of the control panel?

1st: 6800GT is a very good card. Its a bit better than my old X800XL, so props on that.

2nd: Are we talking about a SLi board here? If we are, and the other card isn't a 6800GT, then yank the other card. The faster card will slow to the speed of the slower one, and hurt your preformance.

3rd: uninstall all old drivers for the other card. Pop in the new card, grab the latest nVidia drivers and your good to go.

OK thank you a lot for the answers but I have a couple more questions:

1. I'm almost positively sure my board is SLi, how can I check for sure?

2. How do I uninstall drivers? Do I simply install the Nvidia ones and they will delete over the others or what should I do. (I know how to install them, just not uninstall).

Answers:

1: Your current card is PCI-E correct? Take it out, and try to put it into slot two. If it fits you have a SLi motherboard. Also if you still have the motherboard box or manual, it will tell you.

2: There is a nVidia driver uninstall tool floating around somewhere.

If all you have is a PCI slot and you are trying to buy a PCI-E Videocard, that will not work. PCI is a completely different slot compared to PCI-E.

Check to see if you have an AGP slot (Usually brown). Then we may be able to help you further.

That's probably not a good idea at this stage. Leave surgery to a qualified Doctor.

Perhaps if you quote your mainboard model number and current video card we can be of more assistance, otherwise we are pretty much shooting in the dark, and that could mean a nasty accident.

Yea, knowing now that you have a mobile processer in a desktop, there is almost no chance that you have a PCI-E slot, and therefore cannpt accept the 6800GT.

My advice would be to upgrade your whole system, as your very limited with upgrading it.

The current vid card is built into the motherboard, pretty sure it's the chip that says SIS

Opportunity knocked and I'm now getting a 7800GTX. Any problems with this fitting on ^above motherboard?

Those are regular PCI slots. AGP and PCI-Express video cards don't work in those slots. 7800GTX will definately NOT work. NO modern video card will work on that motherboard.

That is the worst motherboard I've ever seen in my life. Seriously, my advice is to throw the whole computer in the trash can. It is not worth spending money to upgrade it.
