Temp strikes again!

Postby Jakemaster » Sat Jul 29, 2006 9:48 pm

Now its the graphics card.  It gets extremely hot, but when I shut down the comp it cools down relatively quickly.  The card is hot, but I have no performance or graphics problems.  I think it might just be dust, after all the computer sat here for a week and I can see some dust buildup in it anyways.  Tomorrow I am gonna go get a cleaner (one of those aircans) and clean it out, hopefully thatll solve the problem.

If anyone knows of another reason why it might be getting so hot, could you tell me so I can fix it?

The same reason your CPU gets hot. Useage ;)

But seriously, its probibly your overclock, or poor HS/F

Video cards get hot, if it doesn't burn your finger and it works, it's fine.

The whole ATX case standard and video card design standard is flawed in that the card's heatsink faces down, naturally causing heat to rise into the PCB.

What did you expect? Video cards are supposed to be hot thats why they have heatsinks and fans. This is no cause for concern and the stock fan is usually sufficient.

Anyways if you don't see artifacts in games you're fine.

I suggest you look into installing a Zalman HS+F for your GPU. They are often more silent than the stock ones, but they are way better in terms of heat dissipation. The only drawback I'm aware of is that you will likely lose one of the adjacent PCI slots, because these heatsinks are quite bulky.

The heat is basically I can touch ANY part of the card and its hot, like really hot, I have to pull my finger off after a few seconds.  As I said im gonna pull it out and clean it today, but I have a fan (just a little portable fan) set up to cool it off now, its working fine

ATI cards get hot Jake... that is one of their trademarks  ;)

That is why I always install a Zalman cooler with memory chip heat sinks when I run ATI products. It is practically a prerequisite to owning ATI.

You think ATI runs hot? The XFX 7600GS is overclocked by 25% out ot the box on a passive cooler. It runs 70 celsius idle and 105 celsius on load. No wonder they call it "Xtreme Edition".

This is normal. Every 3D card I owned so far was like this.

The whole ATX case standard and video card design standard is flawed in that the card's heatsink faces down, naturally causing heat to rise into the PCB.

The cards that blow air out of the back of the case have the same temperatures though.

Don't even get me started on that design FUBAR. Zalman VFN-700Cu is all you will ever need for any video card. Runs cool, cheap, and quiet. What more could you want.
