Yep AMD are only dropping the prices of the 512k L2 cache processors (3800, 3800X2, 4200, 4600).

The 1mb cache CPUs are being discontinued.

Over here in the UK all AMD S939 processors are in huge demand and huge shortage at the moment. The retailer I normally use (Overclockers UK) are desperately trying to find stock of them.

I'm not a "fanboy" on either side and I can see that Conroe, for the moment, wipes the floor with AMD. But the "paper launch" of Conroe by Intel on the 24th was a huge mistake. Just reading threads about it on OCUK show how many people this has put off.

Maybe a dirty marketing trick by Intel. Put off Conroe to make people either buy the X6800 or a cheap Celeron to tide them over. Dirty, agreed, but I'm sure it works for them in the long run.

For now I'm running a 3700+ overclocked to 2.8ghz. So basically FX57 speed. I'm not planning on changing for a while yet. I will be watching with interest though :D

Actually all AMD 939 CPUs and MOBOs will be discontinued by the end of '07, and 754 by the end of '09. AMD is trying to force people onto AM2 and 4x4 tech.

My mistake, I didn't finish that sentence!

What I meant to say was:

The 1mb cache CPUs are being discontinued as well as the 512kb cache ones, but the 1mb ones will not have price slashes.

There we go. That Makes sense.

@PisTon: 754 is going to live longer due to the opteron's and their popularity with server builders. They figure that gamers (people that would be buying 939) will want to upgrade to AM2 anyway, and theres no real reason to keep it around for long.

Well, the whole point of AM2 is to save money on manufacturing costs. This is why 939 is being phased out so fast.

I don't think too many people are upgrading from 939 to AM2 unless their 939 system truly sucks because AM2 doesn't offer a significant performance gain for the money it takes to buy a new CPU, mobo, and RAM.

No, they went to AM2 to create sales, there was no reason at all for a socket change other than to force everyone to yet another needless upgrade.

The only legitimacy for a socket change was the possibility of installing the new CPU's on an existing Socket 939 mainboard where the onboard CPU memory controller wouldn't be compatible with DDR2 RAM.

That could have been solved with a "dummy" pin methinks, but that's not the point, they needed a new socket to guarantee sales.

My bitch is that they should have continued production of socket 939 cpu's while there was still obvious demand, and continue to support the platform for a reasonable amount of time. They didn't do it because they don't want people like me to get a fantastic CPU at a cheap price.

Conroe is looking so much better to this long term AMD supporter.   ;)
